LICENSING URGED.
-CONTROL OF SIDESHOWS. PROPOSAL ENDORSED. The importance of having all sideshowmen licensed was emphasised in a lettor received by the general committee of tlio Alanawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, yesterday afternoon, from the Royal Agricultural Society, which was asked that tlie association complete endorsement of the copy of the proposed licensing by-laws in order that they could be gazetted. It was pointed out by the society that reports of cases of robbing had been very prevalent this season, and attention was drawn to incidents alleged to have occurred at the Pahiatua, Fcilding, and Danncvirke fixturesProposals had been advanced, stated Mr H. E. Kissling, secretary-organiser of the association, for the issue .of licenses to sideshowmeu at £1 for principals and 2s 6d for assistants, subject to confiscation or endorsement. They would be issued by the association after reports had been made by the police, and the Royal Society had made arrangements for the gazetting of approved side-show regulations, as well as a confidential system of inter-com-munication with associations. “There arc some scallywags among the side-showmen, but many of them are quite genuine as a class,_ and should not be condemned,” said Air J. Linklater. All’ Kissling said there had been numerous allegations of robbery this season, and the genuine side-sliowmen would welcome the advent of the regulations, as the others were spoiling the legitimate business. Air AI. A. Comvay commented that some protection was required from confidence men. ; It was decided, on the motion of Mr W. G. Shannon, to endorse the proposals and press for their adoption.
