PAHIATUA.

P A 111 AT UA, Feb. 23. Mr G. Godfrey Taylor presided at a meeting of the Pahiatua District High School Committee last evening, two lettors were received from the Wellington Education Board. Tlie first dealt with the mattor of improvements to the schoo. grounds, which, it stated, were still under consideration. The second notified that tenders had been called for the erection of bicycle stalls at the school. A further letter was received stating that the giant for tho construction of a sand-pit and the painting of kerbing in the schoo ground had been approved. Ihe chairman explained that there had been a great deal of delay in the approval ot tho grant, which amounted to_ i/li ,-fs oil. Three applications were received in answer to the advertisement qi a caretaker at the school. It was decided that Mrs Beaufort be recommended to the Education Board for tho position. . -\t the week-end, the Mangatainoka cricket eleven scored a further win when they played Mangamaire on their ground, by a two innings total of 142 (61 and 81) against 86 (53 and 33). Mrs Iluist presided at the monthly meeting of the Konini Women’s Institute. Ihe monthly competition resulted: Best jar ot preserved plums, Mrs J. Miller 1, Mis 1 • Huist 2. The points prize for the year was won by Mrs D. Keene, with Mrs 11. I-lirst second. Several competitions were held during the afternoon, the prizewinners bein'' Mrs Cowie, Mrs Delehanty, Miss Hirst, Mrs U. Hirst, Mrs Olsen, Mrs Miller und Mrs Groves. Songs were sung bv Mrs Cowie. Tho hostesses, Mesdames Kelly and R. Hirst, served afternoon tea. Prizes for the competitions were donated by Mesdames Delehanty and Miller and Miss M. Hirst. Mr and Mrs C. U Compte arc spending a holiday at Taupo and Rotorua. Mrs WT Scott, of Cambridge Street, is u visitor to Napier. Mrs Coppel, of Ballance, left yesterday for Auckland. Mr A Groves has been appointed to tho staff of the Pahiatua District High School and Miss E. Griffiths has been temporarily assigned to a position as supernumary teacher.
