BATHERS IN DANGER.

RESCUES AT PIHA. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Fell. 22. The surf carnival attended by several thousand people at Piha, on the West Coast, was abruptly abandoned shortly after the commencement yesterday to enable the Australian and New Zealand teams to assist bathers in difficult ties. During the day sixteen rescues were carried out, four cases needing resuscitation on the beach and two others further assistance at the club house. The manager of the Australian team (Mr Cameron) expressed the opinion that New Zealand beaches should he more firmly controlled, bathers not being allowed to go beyond a certain zone, as was the practice in Australia.
