LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Business in the stock and share markets last week was extremely brisk and the turnover was even higher than in . any recent week. On the Wellington Stock Exchange the recorded business last week exceeded £120,000, of which Government loans accounted for nearly one-half. Approximately 30,000 shares changed hands. Australian issues accounted for the bulk of the trading in shares last week. '1 ho interest of New Zealand investors is largely centred on Australian shares just now, particularly oil chain stores and companies connected with the metals industries, which arc a very strong market. Substantial gains were recorded by Electrolytic Zinc and Mount Lyell, in sympathy with the advancing prices of the base metals. Government loans were actively traded, but prices were irregular and inclined to case. .Some largo parcels of 3j per cent, inscribed stock, 1938-52, sold at £lOl 15s. Business in local body and company stocks was mainly in Auckland issues, at generally firm rates. Bank shares were well supported on a firm market last week, oyer 3500 being recorded as sold on the Wellington Stock Exchange alone. A feature of the market was a sharp recovery in New Zealand-, which, after touching 40s, moved up to 42s on Saturday. National of Now Zealand were traded at from 61s 9cl to 625. New South Wales advanced to £36 ss, and Unions to £lO 17s 6d. Australasias were firmer at £l3 2s 6d. and National of Australasia, sold at £ls 13s, and £5 paid going at £7 14s 9d. E.S. and A were better at £6 7s 6d. Commercial of Australia ordinaries ranged from 19s 2d to 19s sd. and the preference sold at £9 2s 6d. Insurance shares were quiet. South British had sales at 995, later business being done at from 98s 3d to 98s. A feature of flic pastoral issues was an advance in Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock from £42 to £45. Dalgcty eased from £lO 15s 3d to £lO 10s. Golds brougli Mort were steady at 38s Id to 38s. Breweries were actively traded on a generally firm market, Now Zealand advancing from 58s to 60s. Woollen and meat freezing issues attracted more attention, hut prices showed little change. Auckland Gas weakened to 215.. The strength of the steel industry was reflected in Broken Hill Proprietary, which were heavily traded and moved up from 80s 9d to 85s 6d, the contributing issue also firming. British Tobacco advanced from 51s 7d to 52s 9d, and Burns Philp to 77s 6d. Dunlop Perdriau were firmer on sales at from 18s lid lo 19'S 3d. Advancing metal prices brought strong support to Mount Lyell which were heavily traded on a rising market at from 43s 8d to 51-, a gain of 7s 4d on the week. Electrolytic Zinc ordinaries moved up .from 55s 5d to 61s, arid the preference from 55s lid to 61s lOd. In chain stores a strong advance was made by G. J. Coles from £5 2s to £5 13s. The market eased later lo £5 5.- 9d, but. was firmer at the close at. £5 10s. Wool won hs (N.Z.) advanced from £7 to £7 ss, hut the Sydney issue was slightly easier on the week.
