WINS FUTURITY STAKES, PERFORMANCE A RECORD. MELBOURNE, Feb.. 21. The New Zealand-bred colt Gold Rod regained the limelight when, after appearing to have little chance of running into a place, lie brilliantly pounced on the leaders to will the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield yesterday. I hrcc-y car-olds have won the Futurity, but none with 9.4. Ammon Ra, who, like Gold Rod, was ridden by McCartcn, won with 9.3. Heavy rain militated against fast time for to-day’s race. Gold Rod is owned, trained and ridden by the former New Zealanders, Mr E. J. Watt, George Price and M. McCartcn respectively. Lochlco, under the heavy impost of 9.7, was not disgraced in finishing fifth in the Alma Stakes. North Wind, the Caulfield Cup winner, won the Woodclifit Handicap so impressively that it enhanced his prospects for tile Australian Cup. Treasure Trove advanced her record to seven seconds out of her last, eight starts, when' she filled that position behind Afghan in the St. Clair Trial.
