WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AITTI, Feb. 19. The final meeting of the Women’s Institute committee was held on Wednesday afternoon. Jins C. Stanley presided, and there were present: Mcsdames FI. Schmidt (acting lion. secretary), Harland (hon. treasurer), J. Jensen and W. Duncan (vicepresidents), G. Watkins, L. Gould, Misses Strahan and Swift. The routine business was put through and the secretary and treasurer read the annual report and financial statement respectively. These wore approved of for presentation at the annual meeting, and both Mrs Schmidt and Mrs Harland were congratulated on their work. Nominations were received for the new committee. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on the second Tuesday instead of the first. The aster competitions will also bo held on that day and the classes are as follow: —Champion bloom, best 3 blooms, collection of asters (not more than six), decorative bowl of asters (to bo judged for effect), and collection of summer flowers (not more than 12). There will be a first prize in each class and points given for second and third placings. The member who gets most points without winning a first prize will qualify for a special prize. Some excellent suggestions were offered by members for future consideration. After a discussion of various other matters, the president thanked the members for their work and co-operation and the happy spirit which had prevailed throughout the year. PERSONAL. Much sympathy will bo extended to Mr E. A. Payton, who has just received news of the death of his mother, Mrs E. Payton at her home near Bristol, England. It was Christmas Eve and the late Mrs Payton was crossing the road from her homo with little gifts for the children of a neighbour, when she was caught by a passing lorry and killed instantly. The funeral of the late Frontiersman S. J. Flemmings, of Umutoi, took place yesterday afternoon at the Uidgc Road cemetery, Apiti. There was a lengthy cortege and many members of both the Whariti troop (of which deceased was a member) and the city troop of the Mannwatu (“N”) Squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen were present. The pall-bearers, all members of the Whariti troop, were Frontiersmen A. K. Groves, C. Stanley, Rowbotham, F’oote, L. Caldwell and F. Short. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. R. Coombridgc, of Apiti, and was followed by Legion Captain J. Mewctt, 0.8. E., M.O. reading the legion burial service. At the conclusion, the frontiersmen, led by Captain Mcwett, passed by the grave of their comrade in single file, saluting as they did so. There were many beautiful floral tributes, testifying to the esteem in which the late Mr Flemmings was held by all who knew him. Mr and Mrs A. Doughty have left on a visit to Masterton. GOLF CLUB. The annual meeting of the Golf Club was held on Wednesday evening and the following officers for the ensuing year were elected: Patron, Mr W. J. Vilcs" (re-elect-ed); president, Mr 'J'. K. McLean; vicepresidents, Messrs C. Cockburn, H. Watson, G. Osborne, C. McMillan and J. Swift; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Swift; assistant secretary, Mr Buckmau; club captain, Mr A. W. Bird (re-elected). The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. Watson, the retiring president, on whose property the local links are situated. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr G. Guthrie, hon. secretary, for the past year, who is shortly leaving the district. He will ho much missed for his keen interest and capable help. Future plans for work on the links were discussed, and the new committee will shortly meet to prepare for the opening of the season.
