RACING NEWS

WOODVILLE JOCKEY CLUB. RONA BAY AND ALBY WIN. (By “Mottiroa.”) Favoured by gloriously fine weather, the Woodville Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was ushered j> auspiciously on Saturday. The attendance was the largest for many years, the proceeds from the gates and books being up nearly £2OO on the figures for the opening day last year, which was a Friday, but which was not a great deal worse than the second day (a Saturday). It was evident from the outset that the public were in a speculative mood and the totalisator staff were kept busy throughout the day, £13,257 10s passing through the machine compared with £5661 for the opening day last year, an increase of £7596 10s, or nearly 140 per cent. Racing throughout the day was very interesting, with Awapuni horses rendering a good account of themselves. Old Surrey and Alby scored convincing successes, while Catalogue, who has been off the scene for over twelve months, showed something of his class by running an excellent second in the concluding event. Rona Ray won the main event very decisively, while much interest w r as evinced in the two-year-old race in which Courtcraft, the top-priced colt at last year’s yearling sales, made an auspicious debut. Three inquiries were instituted during the day by the stipendiary steward (Mr B. N. Sandilands). In the Highweight Handicap I’adtios interfered with Otaki at the straight entrance, but the explanation of the jockey was accepted, as was the explanation of the rider of Land Tax, whose mount interfered with Sir Nigel in the Kuahine Handicap. J. Dooley’s handling of Helen Ford in the Woodville Handicap was questioned, and the matter was held over pending further' inquiries. BEN BHAGGJE’S BROTHER. GIRONDE SCORES. Although favourite for the Maiden Plate, Gironde returned his admirers a fine dividend for what was a walkaway win. Beginning well, this elder own' brother to Ben Braggie ran past the pacemaker, Glynue Park, turning into the straight and won easing up by a big margin. Gironde, who is a five-year-old, has not done a great deal of racing and is certain to go on improving. A smart performance went down to the credit of Aurora’s Love, tvho moved up into a good position on the turn, and running her best race to date, just held off Parry, who came from a long way back over the last furlong. He is a fine big four-year-old geiding by Lord Quex from the California mare Molong. Southern Blood finished well into fourth place and might have been in the money but for his rider being disappointed m looking for an opening in the straight. Glynne Park made the running, but faded into fifth place, ahead of Aube and Inheritance. There was some money for Racecall, but he was last away from a straggling start. PADNOS STRIKES FORM. FOOR RUN FOR WINDWARD. The former Awapuni gelding Padnos, who is now trained at Levin, showed what could be expected of a horse of his breeding by a very decisive win in the Oringi Highweight, the effort making amends for his earlier disappointments. Padnos is bred from Rada, a half-sister by Hallowmas to Sasanof, the Melbourne and New Zealand Cup winner. Another good performer closely related to Padnos is the successful sire Raceful. Blue Mauritius and Riogliau attended to the eariy pacemaking but the gait in the first six furlongs was very slow and Padnos, though last, was not far aw r ay from the leaders on the turn. He came around the bunch at the foot of the straight, being followed by Spender, who was also wide out. At this stage the hot favourite Windward, who had been pulling double all the way, ran in on Blue Mauritius and had to be checked, the mishap probably costing him the race. He came again inside the distance, but just failed to get up to Spender. The latter was responsible for a very stout effort, as tnis was his first outing since running second to Speed at l’Oxton in May. He looks a much more solid’gelumg this season. The others were not particularly impressive. FAVOURITES FAIL. HONA BAY SURPRISES. The favourites, Arctic King and Geitel, failed signally in the Woodville Handicap, in which Rona Bay, whose form since she dead-heated for first with Dungarvan at Awapuni had been very poor, slipped away from the field in the back stretch, establishing an unassailable lead which enabled her to hold off the fast-finishing Master Cyklon and Round Score. Rona Bay, who sandwiches good performances between mediocre efforts, is by the Stedfast horse Musketoon from Caviare, an own sister to that good jumper Carinthia and the useful Currajong. Master Oyklon’s effort was a marked improvement on his running in the Egmont Cup, but Round Score, who has been racing very badly, caused an agreeable surprise by finishing well into third place, just failing to get up to Master Cyklon. Arctic King was never really dangerous, but a big mistake was made with Geitel. She moved around the field aprpoaching the six furlongs, but her rider fought with her all the way and left her in an awkward position turning for home. She should improve. Helen Ford was confidently supported and ran a good race without looking likely to trouble the place-getters. Werohia was running in thir.d place behind Rona Bay and Master Cyklon at the half-mile, but cut up badly in the straight and finished well back. Taumau and Ingenuity were never in the picture. SUCCESSFUL DEBUT. COURTCRAFT GREEN BUT SMART. Although he is still a very green colt, Courtcraft confirmed the high opinion held of him by his connectons in making a successful debutin the Sapling Stakes. He certainly had everything in his favour, his most dangerous opponent, Son and Heir, having bolted half-way round the course prior to the start. However,

one could not be other than impressed by Courtcraft’s bold style of galloping and the courage he showed when Atkins shook him up in the straight. That race will work wonders with Courtcraft, who may add further interest to the two-year-old races about Easter time. Son and Heir, a Siegfried colt bred from Arajean, was ) the only seasoned performer in the field, but his bad manners at the barrier are always against him. He bolted half a mile before unsaddling Green, but he was first away, only to be steadied when Courtcraft, who missed the jump-out, ran up from sixth place to the lead at the end of a furlong. ,He hung on well when he challenged the favourite, but tired in the last 50 yards just when he looked like making things interesting. Orient Dawn was second to the straight, but weakened, and Peach King and Gay Molly both came home well behind the dividend-payers. Peach King lias improved a stone since he had his first race at Ashhurst. ltepo and Red Cockade showed no pace at all. DOWNFALL OF SANSFOY. OLD SURREY SUCCESSFUL. The rider appeared to be over-con-fident on the warm favourite, Sansfoy, in the President’s Handicap, for he was content to allow Old Surrey and Blue Garter to make all their | own rules in front. When he did challenge in the straight the pacemakers were going too well and the topweigfit failed to get up. He looked a good thing beaten. Old Surrey ran a great race and fully deserved his success. He has done well since he ran third to Lady Jna and Alunga on the final day at Trentham, and there should be more successes ahead for the Awapuni gelding. Old Surrey, by the way, was confused with Catalogue in the final gallops last week, the latter being wrongly credited with a smart six furlongs. Blue Garter ran one of her usual solid races, but found Old Sur- ! rey j ust too good at the weights. The placed horses drew right away from the others in the straight. | GREAT FINISH. FOUR PASS POST IN LINE. The Ruahine Handicap was productive of a wonderful finish, Alby, Mandamus, Karl and Sir Nigel passing the post practically in line and well clear of the field. Alby, who was backed down to favouritism, began better than usual and was never lar away from the pacemakers, Karl and Mandamus, whom he wore down m a desperate finish. Alandamus, having his first race since the Auckland summer meeting, showed a surprising amount of pace in the early stages of the race, winch should attune him nicely for longer events in the immediate future. Karl just failed to see out the journey under his 9.0, but Sir Nigel was responsible for a brilliant perfromance, coming from the tail of the field in the straight to be only short heads away ironi the winner. Land Tax and Wymcony were prominent just behind Karl into the straight, but faded out when the pressure was applied. Darecourt did best of the bouten division without being impressive. Bodyhne was chopped back at the start and lost several lengths. MAESTRO WINS WELL. CORROBOREE CUTS UP BADLY. Maestro, who has been “knocking at the door” for some time, duly landed in the Kumeroa Handicap, it was a solidly-run race, nearly two seconds faster than the open event, and Maestro, who had made most of the running with King’s Lancer, came right away at the finish to win as he liked from the Greyspear gelding, who was having his first race since the last Woodville meeting. YY’aitohu carried Maestro and King’s Lancer along in the early stages, with Corroboree and Revival bringing up the rear. When tiie latter two were expected to come through at the foot of the straight, their runs did not flatter their admirers for long. They gave up at the distance and were finally well beaten. Convivial ran a lair race into third place, but never once threatened to do any better than that. SILVER RIVER SURPRISES. GOOD EFFORT BY CATALOGUE. The three-year-old Silver River scored a very decisive win in the County Handicap in which she always was handy to the pacemaker War Lap, and when he codapsod below the distance she assumed command and held off the fast-finishing Catalogue, whose forward showing was very encouraging. The favourite, Rustem, as well as Helios and All Spirit, suffered worst in the straggling start and their chances from that stage were hopeless. War Lap made all the early running from Silver River, Quake, Catalogue and Royal Record, and there was no change in the order until the pacemaker retired. Quake was just nosed out of the second dividend. In the concluding stages Tupai and Gladium were noticed finishing on. RESULTS IN DETAIL. MAIDEN PLATE, of £BS; second horse £lO, third £5.
