UNUSUAL CASE.

WATER IN MILK. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Feb. 19. A recommendation that the ' Health Department should send out circulars to all tradespeople who were accustomed to keep milk in refrigerators, was made by Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.. in tlio Magistrate’s Court, in convicting and discharging a milk bar proprietor fjr selling milk containing 10 per cent, of added water. ; Sub-Inspector Fox said there were 1 some unusual circumstances involved 1 in the case. The Health Department j had taken the proceedings mainly he- | cause it was thought advisable to give 1 publicity to an offence -of this nature, j In a letter to the police, Dr. Makgill, | medical officer of health, said that a 6 sample was taken from a refrigerator | in the milk bar. Inquiries had been | made, and it was found that the tern- I perature of the refrigerator was set j so low that any milk left overnight i would freeze to a depth of two inches § on the bottom of the can and the liquid 8 milk above would have frozen par- X tides floating on the top. The U method of thawing a frozen block of I milk was to jilace it in other milk. The \ frozen block of milk apparently con- | tained an exceedingly high water j content, and was the cause of the ad-j ditional water in the sample which j had been taken by the inspector. There ( was every reason to believe water had been added innocently when the milk was being thawed. e It was the first case of the kind in I Auckland, said Sub-inspector Fox, | and in view of the fact that there were 1 many shops using refrigerators in the ,} city, publicity would be desirable. He asked that no penalty be inflicted.

“This appears to be a very unusual | case,” said the Magistrate. “It is '? well that the matter has been brought before the public to ensure its does not j, happen again. It would perhaps be a A good idea if the Health Department | sent circulars to the people interested.” *
