FORM FOR TARANAKI.
MEETING OPENS TO-MORROW MARTARA CUP FAVOURITE. (By “Moturoa.”)
The Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting opens to-morrow at New Plymouth anti fine fields are engaged for all events, ten being left in the eleven furlongs Taranaki Cup, in spite of the defection of Dungarvan and Haut Monde this week. Spiral is loft to head the list in the Cup, and despite his failures at Trcntham one is loath to pass him by for his holiday form was really good. Hazoor, who raced well on this circuit last year, will not bo neglected, but moro attention will bo paid to One Whctu, who was a very unlucky runner in the Wanganui Cup. That race will improve him considerably. Manawatu’s attention will bo focussed on Martnra, who won the Douro Cup and Summer Handicap at Trentham in his last two starts and is in rare fettle. Chief Ranger, though thoroughly fit. has to be taken on trust over this distance and Aussio lla will need to improve vastly on recent form. On the other hand, Taitoru is a wonderfully improved horse and, on Wanganui running, well worthy of consideration. Tahuraugi is not without chances here. Oratory has a solid impost in the Flying Handicap, but this class mare, who was unluckily beaten in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, is certain to run a good race despite her 9.9. The distance will bo too short for Wotan, and Refresher has apparently slipped. Notiurn and Nod Cuttle will have many friends, with the former making the greater appeal. There will also bo a backing for Lone Raider and The Tiger. Win-and-place betting will bo in vogue at this meeting and form points to the foiI lowing being in demand in their engagements to-morrow: — Waitara Hurdles. —Benedictine. Court Anna. Ngamotu Juvenile.—Greenwich, Wild Flower, Cardsharper. Flying Handicap.—Oratory", Notiurn, Ned Cuttle or. Lone Raider. Moturoa Electric.—Eagle’s Eye, Roscrana, Kentucky Song. Taranaki Cup.—Martara, One Whctu, Spiral. Okato . Hack. —International, Lo Grand, Maestro. Taranaki Plate.—Ned Cuttle, Mustang, International or High Test. Timaru Hack. —Rustem, Calshot, Export. Form at Wairoa. The Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting opens tn-rnorrow and the following will find favour with backers: — Maiden Scurry.—Bold Bruce, Shani, Hunting Spy. Ormond Handicap.—De Friend, Fossicker, Blygainl Rauwa Hack.—Fossicker. Happy Hunting, Perfect Lady. Trots at Hutt Park. Splendid fields have been attracted to the Wellington Trotting Club’s cup meeting which opens at Hutt Park to-morrow. Win-and-placo betting will be in vogue and form horses engaged include: — Preliminary Trot.—G.irfalcon, Swordsman, Franz Derby. Gracefield Handicap.—lvia Kaha, Aco Pligh, Black Marble. -.Hutt Handicap.—Frank Best, Superior Rank, Aide de Camp. New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup.— King’s Warrior, Gamble, Graham Direct.
Progressive Handicap. Swordsman, Great Sonoma, Girfalcon. Probationers’ Handicap.—Black Marble, Dark Hazard Starwyn. Dispatch Handicap. Savoldi, Post Ilasto, True Reflection. Kia Ora Plandicap.—Plutus, Valdor, Rayon d’Or. Improving. The Hunting Song gelding Royal Routine had done very little schooling prior to the Wanganui meeting, and lie improved wonderfully with his experience the first day to run a creditable second on Saturday. Royal Routine should continue to improve and will have to bo considered on the Taranaki circuit, even though ho schooled slovenly yesterday at Now Plymouth. For Hawt'.a. Tho steeplechaser Forest Glow k being brought back to racing early this season, his connections evidently having cast eyes on the good cross-country events at Ellorslie at Easter. Forest Glow, . who was taken to Taranaki by L. Knapp yesterday, is still somewhat backward, but will ha raced at Hawera next week. Bred Right.
Drathuk, who figures among the acceptors for tho Ngamotu Juvenile at New Plymouth to-morrow, is a beautifully-bred filly by Captain Btinsby from Gold Beauty, a half-sister to King Lu and a granddaughter of Merry Nif, the dam of General Latour. Drathula won tho parade at Now Plymouth in September, but has been given every opportunity to develop before being raced. Her running will be watched with interest, for she is engaged in the autumn two-year-old classics. Showing Form.
While Ned Cuttle failed to pay a dividend at Wanganui last week, ho nevertheless ran two good raced and they should serve to tune him up to coneortpitch for the Taranaki circuit. Ned Cuttle has been finishing solidly nt. the end of six furlongs and it looks as if form followers will install him favourito for tho Taranaki Plate to-morrow. Better Distance.
Tho Colossus gelding Rustem was unlucky in the running the first day at Wanganui, and on Saturday lie was racing under his distance, his second to the speedy Collodion being a good effort in tho circumstances. To-morrow at Now Plymouth ho should be more at home over six furlongs. Rustem won hid first race on this track twelve months ago when lie created a surprise in the Moturoa Electric Hack.
On The Upgratfe. His finishing effort into second place behind Taitoru, who subsequently won in open company last week, drew attention at Wanganui to the immediate prospects of International. This smart three-year-old is in both the Okato Hack and the Taranaki Plate to-morrow, but the longer race may suit him better for he docs not appear to lack stamina. Speedy Though Small.
The diminutive Eagle’s Eye, who was backed and beaten at Ashhurst, displayed a lot of pace in that race before being knocked back to last. At the Taranaki Christinas meeting she ran third to the brilliant Clessamor over five furlongs, and there is nothing of his class to bump up against in the .Moturoa Electric Hack tomorrow. May Do Better.
The Musketoon gelding Mustang did not havo the best of luck in the running of the open class Raiunai Handicap at Ashhurst, that race should do him good and his re-entry into hack company in the Taranaki Plato to-morrosv is interesting. Mustang, nt his best, is a good class galloper up to a mile and ho is sure to be in demand. Back To Sprinting.
There was a ion of Taranaki money lost during the holidays when the Acre gelding Calcshot failed to do bettor than run two thirds at Awapuni and a third at Stratford. Ho has had time to freshen up again and those who supported him in his last throe starts will be looking to got oven with this disappointing gelding at Now Plymouth. He iis engaged in the six furlongs Tirnaru Hack to-morrow.
Auckland Cup Winner. After winning the Auckland Trotting Cup .King's Warrior had a few days’ rest, and is reported to bo looking bright and well to stand a preparation to meet the star performers from Canterbury in the N.Z. Trotting Gold Cup contest at Hutt Park to-morrow.
King’s Warrior defeated several good horses from Canterbury in the big event at Epsom at Christmas time, and his candidature for Gold Cup honours will give added interest to the race, because he will have to he a good horse to lead the best from the south home.
Should King’s Warrior be successful, then ho will lie in line for exclusive races at Easter, and for the New Zealand Plotting Cup of 1937. King’s Warrior has had a rapid rise to fame. In about two years lie has won fourteen races. Hits sire. Blue Mountain King, was bred in Australia, where he won a Sydney Thousand and came to New Zealand and won two Auckland Cups. Notwithstanding his line achievements, he was one of the most neglected sires ever to stand in this country. Yet, with very limited opportunities, he left some fine performers. Among them are Blue Mountain, Mountain Dell, Free Advice, First Flight, Kewpie’s Guy, and King’s Warrior. Answer to Correspondent.
