PALMERSTON NORTH THEFT.

HOTEL PORTER’S OFFENCE.

AUCKLAND, Feb. 1

The theft of £lO from the room of a guest at a Palmerston North hotel on January 5 was admited by Mervvn Vivian Johnson, aged 24. a labourer, in the Police Court on Saturday. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said Johnson, w.hile employed as a porter at the hotel, got to know a man named Charles Eric Ackerstrom. While Ackerstrom was away at work on January 5, Johnson went to his room and extracted two £5 notes from a suitcase, afterwards coming to Auckland. Ho had since expressed his regret, and said that he was anxious to make restitution. Johnson was living apart from his wife.

“My client tells me that Ackerstrom had been flashing his money ' about, and that when he got short Johnson went and took the money,” said Mr Aekins. If Johnson were given another chance he would go to work in tho country, and would make full restitution.

Johnson was admitted to probation for 12 months, and ordered to repay tho amount stolon.
