£SO CHEQUE STOPPED. At the Feilding Show yesterday, it is alleged, a visitor front Palmerston North was induced, when trying his luck at a sideshow, to write out a cheque for £SO on the pretext that it would be burned by’ a person connected with the entertainment. The cheque was made out and handed over, a piece of paper being duly burned. An onlooker had doubts as to whether it was the cheque,''and the drawer was advised to get in touch with his bank at once and stop payment. This was done. Later 'in the day the incident came under the notice of the police and the writer of the cheque was then located. Meanwhile, however, the cheque had been presented at a Palmerston North bank. It was not acted upon, the clerk marking it “cancelled.”
