FITNESS TO DRIVE.
SUGGESTED TEST. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. “As far as we doctors are concerned, it would he a- good thing towards determining a man’s fitness to drive if, in doubtful cases of intoxication, the suspected person should be allowed to drive his car,” said Dr. A. A. Tennent, when giving evidence as a witness in the Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr J. M. Luxford, S.M., in a case in which William Henry Solomon, a taxi proprietor, aged 49, was charged with being found intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Wakefield Street on the night of January 15. The Magistrate: It appears to be the only acid test. There would be no danger, because the driving would be done under supervision. Dr. Tennent: Doctors would he grateful for this opportunity. The Magistrate: Of course, where a case is truly borderline, the verdict must he in defendant’s favour. After the hearing of evidence on both sides, the Magistrate dismissed the case, saying that there was a doubt.
