MARTON. Jan. 29. At a meeting of the Rangitikei County Council, held yesterday, mention was made of the fact that on January 4, 15”7—60 years ago—the first meeting of the council was held. Mr K. AV. Dalyrymple gave a much apprei ciated outline of the progress made in I the period since, while the clerk (Mr | H. M. Richardson) compiled the main I points in the council’s history. The ] members'of the first council elected I were as follow :—Messrs J. Bull, F. IW. Evans, C. M. Galpin, E. Y. I Lethbridge, A. Milne, D. Scott. A. [ Simpson, R. K. Simpson and W. G. j Watt. In 1936 the council’s rates ! amounted to £38,876, as against £3334 in 1886. Receipts in 1936 aggregated £92,344 compared with £7B7Q in 1886, while in 1936 the expenditure

amounted to £93,340, as against £8772 in 1886. Cr. Dalrymple presided over yesterday’s meeting. Provision is to be made in next year’s estimates for

superannuation of employees. In reply to the council’s complaint regarding the spread of noxious weeds in towns and boroughs and on railway | lines, the Minister of Agriculture wrote stating that he had no jurisdiction over town areas, but he would take the question of railways up with the Railways Department. —The clerk was instructed to get in touch with the Municipal Association in regard to towns and boroughs. The Treasury remited £1875 on account of subsidy

on general rates. The Main Highways Board sent authority of £6964 6s 6d (£3 for £1) for the TurakinaMarton main highway. The Public Works Department wrote with reference to the purchase of the traffic inspector’s car, and the chairman was empowered to carry out negotiations. The Wanganui City Council remitted £654 13s 4d, being the council’s share of heavy traffic fees from the pool. The half-holiday question for shops in the county was raised, and Wednesday was decided upon. The engineer’s report on the county ridings was adopted.
