BRITAIN MAY TAKE ACTION. TO EFFECT REDUCTION. Received January 29, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 28. While it is considered certain that the sugar conference vill be held, it is doubted in London whether suck, short notice will achieve good results. It is believed that behind the plan is a definite move to limit or cut down considerably Empire supplies of sugar to the United Kingdom. The increasing quantities which ~ are entering under the preferential scale are causing the’ Chancellor of the Exchequer marked concern. The operation of the preference and the steady rise of supplies from the Empire are resulting in a big loss of revenue to the Treasury.
