RACING NEWS

MARTARA MAKES GOOD. UNDERSTOOD BY APPRENTICE. G. TATTEKSALL’S FINE RECORD. (By “Moturoa.”) The Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting proved without a shadow of doubt that Martara is one of the bc.it, if not the best, three-year-old in New Zealand this season and his form there emphasised the fact that ho was most unlucky to lose the Great Northern Derby, the placings in which were the subject of widespread comment. In winning the Douro Hack Cup with ease under a good horse’s weight of 9.2, Martara indicated in his first start at the meeting that he was the master of poundage and he was possibly lucky to get into the ten furlongs Summer Handicap with the minimum weight. Under this luxurious impost Martara at once _ assumed the role of pacemaker at a clinking bat that noon had the field scratching. He was clear into the straight, where the recognised stayers wore expccicd to putin their claims. But they could make no impression on the Awapuni geldinp who drew right out again and won pulling up in time which is seldom equalled on the course. The records show that trainer G. W. New's apprentice G. R. Tattersall understands the Martarma gelding better than any other horseman who has been given the mount on this brilliant young horse and, in the writer’s opinion, Martara would probably have won the Derby easilyhad Tattersall not been taken off. The boy has been in the saddle in all of Martara’s six successes to date and has ridden him when beaten only twice —in his first race this season and in the Plunket Handicap the second day at Auckland. He did not ride him as a two-year-old. Martara’s record to date reads:— AT TWO YEARS. Unplaced Juvenile, Awapuni (S. Anderson) ... ... ••• . Unplaced Akito Juvenile, Dannevirke (N. Cavancy) ••• ~' Unplaced Danevirkc Juvenile (Cavaney) ““ AT THREE YEARS. Unplaced Moutoa Hack, Foxton (Tattersall) ... ••• , ••• ••• First Maiden Stakes, Opaki (Tattersall) 45 First Spring Plate, Trcntham (Tattersall) First Trial Stakes, Bulls (Tattersall) 55 First Bolton Handicap, Woodvillc (Tattersall) HO Fourth Memorial Stakes, Otaki (B. Morris) “’ Unplaced Plunket Handicap, Ellerslie (Tattersall) Unplaced G.N. Derby (W. Broughton) ;■ Unplaced Goodwood Handicap (H. N. Wiggins) First Douro Cup, Trcntham (lattersail) 280 First Summer Handicap (Tattersall) 420 £1035

Last week Martara’s yearling fullbrother, by Martarma from the Paladin mare Tarahckc, was sold at the National Yearling Sales for 350gns, while his older full-sister Puroto showed her first glimpse of form at Ashhurst when she finished very fast into fourth place. Martara’s successes last week bore out the very high opinion held of him in these columns and it is to be earnestly hoped that he trains on satisfactorily in order that lie can reproduce his fine form in the late autumn and prove himself in the St. Legers the Dominion’s best three-year-old of the season. Game Colt.

In winning the Raitmai Handicap at Ashhurst the Brazen colt Brazen King proved himself a game thrcc-ycar-old for he had anything but a good run. He was slow to find bis feet and was in a bad position at the half-mile, but once headed for the judge he fairly buried the opposition. Ho is very well just now. Ran Badly.

Although ho received the worst of the dispatch in the final event at Ashhurst Mustang made a feeble showing afterwards and ran miles below his true form. He raced ■ encouragingly at the Taranaki holiday meeting, seeming to be on the verge of coming back to liis best again, and the effort is therefore hard to understand. Mustang is more than useful when right and it would not surprise if he made amends at ,an early date. Easy Double. The Komako and Siberia Hacks proved to bo an easy double for Mister Qucx on Anniversary Day, the only surprising feature about tho successes of this consistent gelding being the generous prices he returned. Mister Qucx, who won last month at Woodvillc, is an aged gelding and may not improve much more, but there may still be a few races for him if properly placed. Certainty Beaten.

There is little doubt that Red Sand in the Manawatu . Gorge Hack Cup was-a certainty beaten. She was squeezed out at the start and her rider made no attempt to improve his bad position until heads were fairly turned for home. Standing the leaders an impossible start she was beaten into third place by tho narrowest of margins. She will not be at such generous odds next time out. Turn Overdue.

Since she won at Bulls in October Cloudy Bay has not run a bad race, but Mr T. F. Rolling’s Lapidary marc seems to be doomed to run second, which placing she has filled in her last four starts. Cloudy Bay is standing up to her racing in a remarkable manner and, as she has never looked better than at present, there may be a long overdue win for her soon. Expensive. Calshot. and Hamarin, whose recent form has been good and indicated an improvement, carried nearly half the investments in the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup at Ashhurst, only to fail miserably after having every chance. The Acre gelding Calshot has never looked better than at present, but he has been letting his connections down very, consistently and the followers of R. Johnson's stable must be wearying of him. False Price.

Following her good form lit trough the season the King Lu mare Royal Secret was at a false price in the open six at Ashhurst. She put up a good performance in winning, for she was well back three furlongs from home, but she came through tlie bunch in the straight and won hands down. The handicapper does not yet seem to have her measure. Carried Wide. In the same race the favourite Notuim was possibly unlucky, though it is doubtful whether he would have beaten the Winner under any circumstances. Ho made a smart run turning for home, but Land Ta xand Lavina ran wide, carrying him out into the middle of the course. When ho got going again ho was putting in some telling work and there may be a win for him very soon. Small Team But Good.

The Awapuni mentor E. W. Watson never believes in keeping a big team of horses in work, but with two or three charges he is able to personally supervise their training and thus achieve the best results. With Tauinau and Lady Ina he has won five races in nine starts during the past month. Both havo paid good prices and were backed with confidence by their connections.

Jumped Badly. Had either Midacre or CouTtf Willonyx jumped properly at Ashhurst Miss Hushabve would not have won the hurdle event. Midaere is improving in appearance with his racing, but if Count Willonyx, who rattled every obstacle last week, would take it into his head to go kindly, it would tako a smart hurdler to beat him over a mile and a half.

WANGANUI MEETING.

THE ACCEPTANCES:

Owners responded generously when the acceptances closed last night for all events on tho first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Wanganui on Thursday, and as the result most of the fields have filled well and good racing is promised. I.owenberg is tho only performer of note missing from tho Wanganui Cup, his hard ruco in the Wellington Cup having temporarily “knocked” him. One Whetu, who has freshened up nicely since tho holiday racing, is left at tho top of the list, 21b, above the Ashhurst Cup winner Grand Jury, who won this race last year. Refresher, who won over this distance at New Plymouth on Boxing Day, still stands his ground, while other holiday winners in Musquil and Master Cyldon (who was very unlucky at Ashhurst) are among those who promise to make matters interesting. There is an evenly balanced field of six in the Flying Handicap and opinions in this event will, be well divided. The hack races have drawn strong fields and considerable local interest will be taken in tho meeting. The acceptors are : 12.0

TROTTING GOSSIP,

NOTES FROM ALL PARTS. Gamble and. Grand Mogul are among the early favourites for the Dunedin Cup, to be run next Friday. Gone Off. At the beginning of the season Kingcraft was showing all his old brilliancy, and he proved a good winner for D. ‘Withers, but his recent track work suggests that ho has gone off again, and it has been decided to give him a period in the paddock. Promising Novice. Good reports are to hand concerning Smile Again, a three-year-old sister to Grand Mogul. She is described as an exceptionally nice filly and she is expected to prove as good as her well-perform-ed brother when she lias had more time. Grand Mogul mado the grade to New Zealand Cup company in a very short time, something less than 18 months, and if Smile Again is as good as reported she can be expected to be an early winner in good company. Harold Wrack.

A couple of years ago Harold Wrack was one of the most promising novice pacere in the Dominion, but alter displaying brilliant, speed he commenced to stop at the business end of his races. A change from Washdyke to a Christchurch stable worked no improvement, but a return to R. Townley seqms to havo had beneficial results.

Change Of Stables. Gold Tinge has had several Irameia daring her career, with varying results, but she has never raced as well for anyone as she has done for M. B. Edwards, the Yaldhurst trainer, who prepared Ponty to win tho Wellington Racing Club Cup. However, her more recent form has not been up to her best standard, and she is now to go to L. A. Maidens. The latter trainer has enjoyed a wonderful run of success with horses apparently past their best or in need of reformatory treatment, and if lie can persuade Gold Tinge,. a fast pacer with little idea of responsibility, to do her best, she should still pay her way. F. J. Smith Leads. The Takanini trainer F. J. Smith is making a bold bid to head the list of successful trainers this season, states an exchange. He already has twenty-six successes to his credit, having driven 24 of the winners himself. S. Matthews drove Musketeer at the recent Auckland meeting, and L. Coleman rode Levity at Hamilton. F. C. Dunlevey’s total for tho first half of the season is twelve, so it would ' seem that Smith will again earn the distinction of leading trainer; a position he earned last term, having prepared winners for forty races. For Wellington Cup. The Auckland Trolling Cup winnei, King’s Warrior, is reported to have dono well since he last raced, and providing that he goes the right way he will have his next outing at the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting, when he will contest the principal events. Kings Warrior has now reached hard marks over the various distances, so that his opportunities in Auckland will be restricted from now on, and it is possible that he will be sent to compote at Addington. Another win over two miles will place him m New Zealand Cup company.

Stable’s Big Earnings. During the first live months of the season Mr C. J. Barton’s trotters and pacers have won £5551 in stakes. From August 1 to January 3 his horses competed iu 89 races for 12 firsts, 10 seconds and 11 thirds, slates the Star-Sun. The biggest stake-earner is Grand Mogul with £I3BO to bis credit. He has won three races, and scored one second . and one third. Indianapolis is next with £I3OO, his total being made up of £I2OO for winning the I\ew Zealand r lrotting Cup, and £IOO for establishing a new record, when he registered 2inin 0 2-ssec for one mile at Addington in November. Cloudy Range is close on bis heels, having , recorded three wins, two seconds and one third for £1155. One of the most consistent stake-earners in the establishment is Tempest, which has annexed £B2O. Although he has only been once first to the winning poet he has been second four times anti twice third. Since being purchased b.V Mr Barton in October, Bitter Sweet had competed in six races for three firsts and one third, and she has earned £425. During the 14 years Mr Burton has been un owner his trotters and pacers have won £67,453 m stakes. L'he present year promises to be a record one He lias a formidable team in training’ for future racing. It comprises Indianapolis, Cloudy Range, Grand Mogul, Tempest, Chancellor, Plain Pearl, Starwyn, Rongomai, New Ideal, Bitter Sweet, Great Admiral, Torquemada, and Silk Bonny.
