RIVER CONTROL

PALMERSTON NORTH BOARD. At tho meeting of the .Palmerston North River Board, yesterday, Mr A. E. Mans ford presiding, the foreman (Mr A. Lane) reported that on tho completion of the Mcßae’s bend groyne the plant had fitted the added an extra Is 5d per foot, making the total cost as follows: No. 8 groyne, £1 9s ,9d per foot; No. 9 groyne, £1 8s 5d per foot. The extending of No. 10 groyne by 30 feet was in progress. Three piles had been driven and the fitting of tho booms and stays was in hand. Sufficient timber for the completion of this work'had been hauled from the river. The hauling and blasting of the heavy timber which obstructed the regulation of the channel at Fitzroy bend had been carried out prior to the flood on December 22. Several of tho logs were suitable for posts and battens, and these had been split and carted to the high levels out of flood reach. No. 2 punt, which was being anchored behind No. 1 groyne* at the old racecourse, had been cleaned and tarred, the cost being £l2 10s. The statement of accounts showed a credit balance of £B4 6s 4d and receipts (including a £550 advance from the City Council and a £3lO loan by the Labour Department) £3767 Is 3d, a total of £3854 7s 7d. Payments to date were £3560 19s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £293 8s Id.

The rates struck were £2424 0s 7d, of which £IB2B 13s 2d had been paid, leaving £595 7s 5d outstanding. The arrears on rates at tho beginning of January, 1937, were £379 8s 4d, of which £134 15s 7d had since been paid, the amount outstanding being £244 12s 9d.
