INDIAN GHEE MARKET.

OF NU VALUE TO AUSTRALIA. The Indian ghee market is of no value to Australia, according to a report submitted to the Commonwealth Government by the Australian trade delegation which visited India, Burma, and Ceylon. The report states that as one pound of ghee is approximately equivalent to one and one-third pounds of butter, for which 8d would be returned, the return per pound of butter would be 6d. The value of Australian butter, even of the lowest quality, is slightly less than Is per lb, Australian currency. Before the trade could be considered by Australian producers, the price for even the lowest quality Austalian butter on the London market would have to -fall to 44s lOd cwt. The lowest price year recorded was 58s in December, 1934. In two possible eventualities the manufacture and shipment of ghee from Australia might become a commerical proposition—in the event of a British quota on butter imports, or the prohibition by the Commonwealth of the export of second grade or lower quality butter.
