GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI.

WANGANUI HORSES WORK,

MARTARA EOR DUNEDIN CUP

(By “Moturoa.”)

Tho Awapuni tracks this morning were in perfect order after the overnight rain and, while galloping was confined to the local horses engaged at Wanganui tins week, tho work • was generally interesting, much attention being paid to the campaigners from Trcntham, of ■whom will race on the Taranaki circuit. Alby, who nearly created a huge surprise at Trcntham on tho middle day and paid a tall place dividend, did nicely on the trip. He worked well on the sand. Ingonuity is a hardy mare and her recent hard racing has left no effects on hei whatever. Liko Alby she will probably race *t Woodville next month. Waitohu, Severe, Gay Molly, and Beau Lac, and other members of J. Coyle’s team, were among the others working on tho plough. , Martara, who is in light physic, was at the course, but was not worked. The double winner last week has nover looked fitter than at present, his racing at Trcntham having sharpened him up. He is to be nominated to-day for the Dunedin Cup and Hazlctt Memorial, and in the latter race ho will probably have a tilt at the New Zealand Derby winner Wild Chase, both thrcc-year-olde being . required to carry a 10lb penalty. He is also in the Taranaki Cup. # Pango worked on the inside. He is in rare fcttlo and shows no signs of his hard race in the Ashhurst Cup in which event he fully extended Grand Jury. That unlucky mare Cloudy Bay (lattersail) worked with her usual freedom to encompass six furlongs alone on tho course proper in 1.19 2-5, tho last five furlongs in 1.6 3-5. She was finishing on nicely. Catalogue (Anderson) surprised by corning homo from the three lurlcngs in 38seo and appearing to bo going well within himself.

SYMCONY SHOWS BRILLIANCE. Syrncony (Broughton), who was not produced at Trcntham last week, looks well enough and displayed her usual brilliance by skipping over the five furlongs in 1.5, the first three in 38scc. She was going better at the finish than usual. Wild Flower (Tattcreall) worked well over five furlongs. She is a solid filly and, though she failed at Trentham, she is likely to make amends at an early date. She will be raced at New Plymouth next Benedictine (McDowell) always bad a slight advantage over Kitty Quinn (P. Rae) and Forest, Glow (Parlies) over a round of four hurdles. Benedictine, who is engaged at New Plymouth next week, gave a fine display of jumping and looks well forward, while Kitty Quinn fenced with more confidence than she did at Ashhurst. Aurora’s Love (Broughton) and Taillight (Tattersall) finished on terms in a run in from the three furlongs poet, in 38 4-ssec, a good effort on the part of both. Dawning Light, who struck herself in the Wellington Stakes and could not be started on the later days of the meeting, is having a short rest. The Crooner, who ran third in tho Wellington Stakes and filled a similar position the second day, did light work. Ho looks really well and should be a good autumn two-year-old. Black Fox (Broughton) and the Lackham —Merry Sarto gelding (Chisholm) were far from impressive over their six furlongs, which took 1.22 2-5, tho last five furlongs being run in 1.9. Black Fox was stopping at tho finish and is not working as well as was the case before the holidays.

At Wanganui on Thursday W. Broughton will ride Gcitel, Royal Secret, Scarf Dance, and Imposture. P. Rao will probably have the mount on Kitty Quinn. No riders have yet been engaged for Syrncony, Cloudy Bay, or Black Fox. Dungarvan, who will probably contest the Taranaki and Egrnont Cups, was not on the course this morning, but has come through his recent hard races well. Among the other Awapuni horses engaged at the Taranaki meeting are Benedictine, Wild Flower, Martara, Syrncony, and Cloudy Bay.

NEW YEARLINGS. Awapuni will have its share of the yearlings sold at the national sales last week and will do as well as most Dominion training centres, for many of the lots offered at Trcntham wore disposed of to Australian buyers. Three youngsters will go into Mrs A. W. McDonald’s care —two by the Weetincre sire Beau Pero, and also the Pombal—Episode colt purchased by Mr R. H. Lowry for 200gns. This youngster is an own brother to Burnish (G.N. Champagne Stakes) and Epigram (a good winner in Australia) and a half-brother to Entail (G.N. Guineas and N.Z. St. Leger). Episode was the best of her year and was by Limond from Homage, by Absurd from Eulogy. This breeding is interesting as Pombal (the colt's sire) and Limond (sire of Episode) wore half-brothers. One of the Beau Pore youngsters is the Sahara fdly, purchased for 325gns. Sahara, who never raced (and is a half-sister to Oreutn, dam of Gold Rod) is by the Captivation horse Grandcourt from Desert Gold (winner of 36 races and £23,133 in stakes and sister to Egypt and-Nigger Minstrel), by All Black from Aurarius, by Maltster, from Aurous (a half-sister to Auraria, winner of the Melbourne Cup), by Wallace, a son of Carbine.-

Mr J. T. Spiers', owner of Alby, purchased to go into G. W. Now’s care the Colonel Cygnus—Lambent filly for lOOgns, who went so cheaply only because she was a late foal. Colonel Cygnus, who was a winner, is by Cygnus from the Acclaim mare Kish-lc-Shee. Lambent is by Tractor (a son of Gravitation) from Dazzling Light (second in the Oaks and sister to Razzlc Dazzle), by Kilbroney, from that great imported Symington mare Simper, dam of Gold Light, Sir Simper, Ruling Light, Beacon Light and company. . The fdlies of this branch of the Illuminate family .have usually done best and this youngster, who should furnish when placed into work, may be one of last week’s bargains.

Trainer New considers that Martara’s full-brother, who was purchased for 350gns, was a bargain missed. He could probably have been bought for 400 or 500gns, and after Martara’s two successes in the following days, the purchaser could have secured lOOOgns with little difficulty. This yearling, in His opinion, is an even more attractive type than Martara. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. “E.W.,” Levin.—(l) £6 18s and £2 53 6d; (2) £2 18s; (3) £2 3e. WANGANUI GALLOPS. THE FINAL TRIALS. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Jan. 26. Tine weather was line for the final gallops in preparation for the Wanganui meeting, which is opening on Thursday. The No. 1 grass truck was in good order. LI. Dulieu is the only visiting, trainer to put in an appearance so far, but several are coming to-night. Entail (F. Latham) went six furlongs by himself in 1.15, the first half-mile in 49 3-ssec. The Cup candidate did it nicely. Imposture (R. Morrison) and Missal (Latham) did five furlongs in 1.3, the first quarter of a mil© in 24jsec. They finished together. ‘ Scarf Dance finished a length ahead of Gay Marionette after half a mile in 50 l-ssec. . Parikino covered five furlongs in 1.3. Collodion and Rcipar did six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, the last five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. The former was a length in front at the finish. , . Royal Secret, Red Sand, Sanhedrin, Airing, and Pin Money did solid racing. Etiquette covered five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. Court Arma went a round of the schooling hurdles with Bazaine. The latter finished in front, but clouted a couple of hurdles hard. Court Arma jumped cleanly and could have done better.
