EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD.” DECEMBER 30, 1906.
The winners on the second day of the Manawatu races had been Assayor, _K.itchenmaid. Munject (Palmerston North Stakes), Weary Bill, Submarine, Highden, Marguerite, and Probable. A now mail service in the Pohanginn Valley was to have Rauinai (instead of l’ohangina) as its southern terminus. New Zealand meat was finding its way into Sweden, where there was a shortage. One of the dairy factories near Hawcra was paying out 13 cheques of £l5O each for the month—a remarkable performance. Among the competitors in the New Zealand chess tournament were S. Crackenthorp (N.S.W.K O. G'. Pleasants (Rangitikei), R. Sainsbury (Argentine), and W. S. Vincr (Perth). Efforts had been made on behalf of Australian interests to secure a reduction in the Suez Canal dues.
