PROGRESS OF PLAY

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 29.

The fourth round of the New Zealand chess championship was played to-day and nine more rounds are yet to be played. Beyer (Wellington), Burry (Auckland), and Erskine (Invercargill) have each completed four games, each winning two, drawing one, and losing one. Jones (Auckland) has won two, drawn one, and has one unfinished, so that he may be said to be leading. Results: —

Fourth round .—-McNabb beat Scott, Hindon beat Beyer, Jones beat Hunter, Severn beat Abbott, Anderson beat Burry. Kelling beat Erskine, Lynch beat Newick. Every game in tho round was finished.

In the premier reserve fourth round Mrs Short beat Langabeer, Mrs Abbott beat Mitchell, Mclntosh beat Aislabie. Goldsmith beat Vincent, H. Christensen beat Mrs Goldsmith.
