AN OLD BIBLE

PRESENTED BY GEORGE IV. A Bible presented to St. Matthew’s Church, Windsor, Sydney, by King George IV, was used for the last time in the church service on December 20. The rector (Rev. G. P. Birk) said that the Bible, which bore the date 1821, had been in continuous use at the church ever since. Now it had become too fragile for regular use, and it would be replaced by a handsome Lectern Bible, which would be dedicated on December 20. Officials of the diocese and parish, together with worshippers and other persons interested in the church, would be asked to sign their names in the back of the old Bible, and it would be preserved in a case in the church. St. Matthew’s, Windsor, is among the oldest churches in Australia, the foundation-stone having been set by Governor Macquarie on October 11, 1817.
