FATAL COLLISION
MISHAP NEAR NELSON. ANOTHER CRITICALLY HURT. Per Press Association. NELSON, Dec. 20. The Nelson-AVaiiti Road, just beyond Wakefield, was the scene of a motor-cycle tragedy in tiie early hours of Sunday morning, and also af another accident at approximately the same time with a motor-cyclist taken to hospital in a very critical condition. Both accidents occurred after the conclusion of a dance at Foxhill.
Alen M. Higgins, aged 18, •while proceeding from Eoxhill to Wakefield on a motor-cycle, had a head-on collision with a car driven by W. Creep, and was killed outright. Apparently the cycle went beneath the car and the cyclist over it. About the same time, W. Mclvor, of Tapawera, aged 21, went for a ride on a friend’s motor-cycle, and nothing was heard of him until 8 a.m. to-day, when he was found lying in a ditch on the side of the road very gravely injured, the motor-cycle lying nearby. He evidently collided with a telegraph post, and received grave injuries. His condition to-night was very critical. WELLINGTON MISHAPS. SPECTACULAR SOMERSAULT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Although the body of a large sedan motor-car. which somersaulted and crashed into a fence on the Hutt Road in the early hours of Sunday morning was smashed almost to pieces, the four pasesngers escaped without injury except ior minor cuts from flying glass. The driver, Mr C. D. MacDonald, an accountant, of Island Bay, was taken to hospital suffering from concussion, a scalp wound and abrasions to the face and hands. It is believed a tyre was punctured and the driver lost control. The car swerved on to tiltcycle track, rolled over for twentyfive yards and then crashed into a wooden fence protecting the railway line, smashing five posts. Two persons were injured in an unusual acciden at Paekakariki on Saturday afternoon when the connecting bar between a motor-cycle and its sidecar collapsed. The driver, Mr S. Tann, a window cleaner, of Wellington, was taken to the hospital suffering from concussion, shock and an injured left shoulder. The passenger in the side-car, • Mrs L. Tibbetts, received concussion, shock and an injury to her back, also a contused left eye. ' A collision occurred between cars driven by Air Rayhiond Basil Jordan, of Longburn, and Air AV. G. Black, of Palmerston North, at the intersection of Alain and Cook Streets yesterday morning. Damage was done to both vehicles, while the younger of Mr Black’s two daughters suffered a cut over the left eye which necessitated medical attention. COLLISION IN SOUTH. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 20. As the result of a collision between a car proceeding towards Alosgiel, from the south and a stationary car at Henley bridge, early this morning Alma Hoad, aged 20, residing at Gordon Road, Alosgiel, a passenger in the moving car, suffered head injuries and a fractured right hand. William Reid, aged 21, residing at Greenock Street, Kaikdrai, who was in the stationary car, received concussion. Both were admitted to hospital.
