LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

Stock and share markets developed a holiday tone last week and dealings were recorded In reduced volume, the turnover being well below the average of recent busy weeks. The stock exchanges will close for the Christmas and New Year vacation to-morrow and will reopen for business on Thursday, January 7. No special features were revealed in last week’s markets. Government loans showed ail easy tendency, some large parcels being transferred. Dealings were mainly in the 4 per cent, issues, prices showing little variation on those of the preceding week. Recorded dealings in local body debentures were wholly in Auckland issues. Amalgamated Brick (Wellington) 73 per cent, debentures, 31-3-34, at £IOO 10s represented the only transactions in company stocks. Bank issues were quiet and slightly irregular. New Zealand sold to 39s 6d ex dividend, but improved to 41s at the close. Commercial of Australia varied between 18s lid and 19s 4d and the preference sold at £9 ss. . New South -Wales ranged from £35 to £34 ss. E.S. and A. Bank sold at £5 18s and £5 17s 6d, and Union of Australia were easier at from £lO 10s to £lO 4s. There was little doing in insurance shares. South British improved from 91s to 935. New Zealand went at from 60s 3d to 60s, and Nation at from 176 lOd to 18s Id.

Pastoral shares were not very active, but Dalgety shares firmed from £lO 12s Od to £lO 14s. Goldsbrough Mort eased from 35s 9d to 35s Id and recovered to 35s 4d. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock sold_ at £35, and National Mortgage A A fairly large minib-qr of New Zealand Guarantee Corporation were traded at 5s 4d. Coal, gas, meat, shipping, timber and other New Zealand industrials were dull. Brewery shares were firm, notably Staples, which advanced from 38s lid to 39s 4d. New Zealand Breweries moved up from 52s 9d to 545, a gain of Is 3d on the week. Chain stores were actively traded at firm rates. G. J. Coles ranged from 89s 3d to 90s. Shillings, Ltd., were stronger and the Woolworths issues showed a hardening tendency. Interest in Australian industrial issues centred mainly in Broken Hill Proprietary, which were distinctly firmer on the week. Colonial Sugar attracted more interest, and British Tobacco advanced on the announcement of a bonus dividend. Electrolytic Zinc improved on the strong market for metals and Mount Lyell also showed an advance. Mining shares were generally firm, Mount Morgan being the most active. SATURDAY’S QUOTATIONS.
