EKETAHUNA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) EICETAHUNA, Dec. 19. At the monthly meeting of the Eketaliuna Borough, Council the Wairarapa Automobile Association asked, in a letter, that the council erect a sign or paint on the road surface, the necessary speed limit signs. It was decided to reply stating that, as the Public Works Department were tailing over the highways as from January 1, it was assumed that they would carry out this work. A letter was received from the Tennis Club asking for a grant in view of tho fact that the council placed their facilities at the free use of visitors, local players making way for visitors. It was decided to reply that the council could not sec its way to make a grant and that the closing of the courts _to visitors would involve the consideration of the establishment of municipal courts. Three building permits had been issued, it was reported. It was decided to inform the Eketahuna School Jubilee Committee that all records would be made available, but that the council could not consider making a grant toward preliminary expenses. Mr D. Butcher was grantod permission to erect a wood shed, but a proposal to erect it in Ilaswell Street, was not entertained. A tender of £857 17s 6d was accepted for tar-sealing on No. 477 main highway. At the proclamation ceremony in Eketahuna, the Mayor read the proclamation after authority to do so had been read by Mr J. B. Carruthcrs, county chairman. At tho third and last shoot for the ladies’ rose bowl by the members of the Tararua Rifle Club, R. Barron was the winner.

Tho Tiritalii prize, donated to the Ekotahuna District High School by Mr W. B. Malheson was won this year by Duncan Drisdaie, with Kathleen Mabey second. At a dance in tho Kaiparoro Hall, Mr and Mrs C. Welch marked the coniing-of-ago of the elder of their two daughters, Miss Nona Welch. Mr It. Kiddie was M.C. Extras were played by Mrs G. Hansen, Miss Xtita McAnuty and Mr J. Torroy. Mrs Welch, hi wine cresta crepe, and Miss Welch, in white silk net and velvet, receivod tho guests. Mr W. Simpson proposed tho only toast, that of Miss Welch. Musical honours were accorded. Mr Welch thanked Mr Simpson for his good wishes, referring, to the fact that his family had resided in the district for 25 years. About 200 guests were present, Martinborough, Masterton, Miki-Miki, Kaituwa, Dannevirke and local districts being represented. Miss Molly Hudson, from tho Toachqrs Training College. Wellington, is spending tho vacation with her parents at Newman. Miss M. G. Hickey leaves to-morrow by car for Auckland, where she will spend the Christinas vacation. Mrs W. G. Macky and family left on Tuosday for Paraporaumu. . The engagement is announced of Avis Campbell Dick, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Dick, Hastwells, to Edgar Griffin Sigvcrtsen, only son of Mr and Mrs J. Sigvcrtscn, ‘also of Hastwells. The engineer (Mr W. G. Maoky) reported to tho County Council, this week, as follows:—The contractors have completed about 90 per cent of the top course metalling on No. 60 highway. Concrete pies for outlet drnins and two wooden bridges will probably be in position before tho end of the year. Although the Main Highways Board takes over from January 1, 1937, wo aro responsible for com plction of existing contracts. Tho contractor for the new concrete culvert near Alfrodton has completed tho pouring of concrete. The concreting at Napier’s bridge was completed on November 30 and the earth work has boon put in hand. Metalling will be commenced this week. The 42 inch pipe near Leach’s Road was completed. The contractors for Godfrey’s bridge have poured the piers to springing level and tho northern abutment has been concreted. Tho contractors for the approaches to Tyler’s bridge have the earthwork well advanced and almost ready for metalling. The bridge contractor expects to make a start before Christmas. Several cornors wore cut back on No. 555 highway.
