TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY.

CRICKET AT WELLINGTON

MANAWATU SHINES

WELLINGTON, Dec. 19,

Manawatu men saved Country from total collapse in the annual match against Town, begun yesterday on the Basin Reserve, Wellington. Country, regarded as having one of the strongest teams for several seasons, made only 156, D. A. R. Moloney and N. Gallichan contributing 49 each, and A. S. H. Cutler 14. They were the only batsmen to reach double figures. The teams were : Town.—Lamason (captain), Dustin, Tindill, J. Ell, McLeod, Ward, Blandford, Parsloe, Tricklebank, Griffiths, Blundell.

Country.—Norris (captain), Betts, Murchison, Moloney, O’Brien, Donnelly, Gallichan, Cutler, Peterson, E. Christensen, McDougall. Peterson (Wairarapa), who is a regular opening batsman for his province, was not used in that position, Murchison (Manawatu) and Betts (Taranaki), being 6ent in first. Both failed, the first two wickets falling for only 25 runs.

Four wickets were then down for 41 runs, but the partnership for the fifth wicket carried the score to 105. Moloney (Manawatu), the former Otago representative, who played for Wellington and New Zealand last season, who had come in at the fall of the first wicket, made 49. Because of the position of the game he was naturally slow in scoring, taking three-quarters of an hour to reach double figures, but lie always appeared comfortable, making his strokes with certainty and power. He took an hour and a half for 49, hitting five fours (two hooks, two square-cuts, and one off-drive), and seven twos and one three. He was particularly sound in playing the ball oil his pads, and on occasion drove strongly off his back foot. Gallichan (Manawatu), who played for Wellington last season and who previously represented New Zealand, also made 49 in an hour and a half. Ha used his height in getting to the pitch of the ball and drove strongly on both sides of the wicket. He hit a six to long-on, but the slow outfield cut down many of his strokes, which would ordinarily have been fours, to' twos (of which he hit nine) and threes (of which he had three). There were one or two mishits over the heads of slips in his strokes, but he batted with commendable resolution at a difficult time. He wa.s ninth man out, caught when trying to force the pace. Cutler (Manawatu), another very tall right-hand batsman, stayed for three-quarters of an hour and made 14, helping to add 35 for the sixth wicket. Norris (Manawatu) and Peterson (Wairarapa), the only other recognised batsmen in the team, did not stay, and the innings closed at 156, made in 180 minutes.

Wellington’s bowling was restricted almost wholly to the fast-medium and medium attack of Parsloe, Triclcleband and Blundell. The first two shared the wind right through the innings. Blundell bowled against the wind throughout except for a short rest when four overs were given to Griffiths.

Town scored at tlio rate of a run a minute after recovering from a bad start, in which two wickets were lost for three runs.

Murchison (Manawatu) bowled medium paced swingers, generally with a good length, but many were well off the wicket.

Three slow bowlers were employed— Gallichan (left-hand), Donnelly (lefthand), and Moloney (right-hand). Moloney produced a high flight and a wide turn, but could not make pace off the pitch, except with straighten deliveries, with which ho secured two l.b.w. victims. Gallichan, with his easy delivery and accurate length, was not dangerous but was inexpensive. At one stage he bowled four maiden overs in succession. Scores

Blundell bowled one no-ball. TOWN. First Innings.
