WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.

LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Business sopenod quietly on the stock exchanges last week, but developed considerable activity, tho turnover being heavy and well up to the average of recent weeks. The markets showed a generally easy tendency except for bank shares, and a few industrial and trading issues. Government loans were on the weak side, with a consequential increase in the yield. Several large parcels of stock changed hands' in Wellington, the total consideration paid during the week being i/75,500. Dealings in local body debentures were confined mainly to Auckland issues, prices being fairly firm. Little interest was shown in company debentures. Bank shares were well favoured, and trading was active, especially in New Zealand, which were traded at higher rales. Business opened at 40s, and sales were made at up to 42s 6d. National of New Zealand moved up from 63s to 64s 3d, the latter price being cum dividend. Other issues showed minor changes. Insurance shares were somewhat easier, National being done at 18s 6d to 18s. New Zealand at 61s 6d to 61s, South British at 90s 6d, 91s 3d, and 91s, and Standard at 60s. Pastoral shares were a little more active. Dalgety sold at. £lO 7s 6d and £lO ss, and New Zealand Loan and Merantile at £35 to £35 10s. Goldsbrough, Mort, cased from 36s 6d to 35. s 9d. Farmers Auctioneering, B pref., sold at 21s 9d, and the £5 paid at 795. New Zealand Guarantee Corporation had dealings at 5s 4d and 5s 3d. Coal mine shares were dull and neglected, and gas issues were weak. Shipping shares were quietly linn, business including P. and O. deferred stock at 41s, and Union Steam preference at 26s Bd. New Zealand Refrigerating were firm and active, the 20s paid selling to 20s 5d and the 10s paid touching par. Canterbury Frozen Meat sold at from £9 12s to £9 15s, but Gear Meat were weak at 16s 3d. Woollen and timber issues were quiet. Breweries showed a firmer tendency, and New Zealand moved up from 53s to 53s 10s. Staples were strong at 37s 6d, and Dominion advanced from 37s to 40s 4£d, the new issue soiling at 395. Chain stores were traded actively, a feature of this section being a strong advance in G. J. Coles. Business opened at 79s lid, and moved up to 86s, a gain of 7s Id on the week. The announcement of a quarterly dividend of Is a share largely accounted for the rise. The Woolworths issues received good support, but prices were somewhat irregular. The New Zealand shares eased off from £6 15s to £6 4s, but recovered to ‘£6 16s. The Sydney ordinary issues were heavily traded at from £7 8s 6d to £7 15s 6d, a slightly easier trend being shown later. The \\ est Australian were firm at £6 14s 3d to £6 17t> 6d. Macduff’s preference sold at 21s, and Self ridges (Australasia) at 36s 3d to 37s 3d. Industrial and trading issues were well favoured, although some of the leading Australians sold on a lower level. British Tobaccos advanced from 44s 5d to 46s 9d on the announcement of the 2 per cent, quarterly dividend, but they eased later to 45s 2d. Broken Hill Proprietary eased from 79s 9d to 78s 9d, and the contributing issue to 665. DunlopPcrdriau were weak, and Electrolytic Zinc showed a slight casing. New Zealand Drug sold at 74s 6d to 75s 6d. Business in mining issues was very active. Mt. Lyell weakening from 37s Id to 36s Id. Mr Morgan were well supported at from 15s 3d io 16s 6d, but fell away later. Waihi Investment were strong at 12s 6d to 12s 7£d, and Martha at 19s 9d.
