LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Heavy trading in chain store issues, especially Woolworths, and a general eas ing in prices of Australian industrials were the outstanding features of last weeks markets. Business wus exceedingly brisk during the earlier part of the week, but in sympathy with the decline in Australia, dealings fell away toward the close. A substantial volume of business was recorded in Wellington, dealings including several large parcels of 34 per cent, inscribed stock to the value of about 000. Of over 15.000 shares vuluedl at approximately £50,000 sold on the Wellington market last week, chain store issues accounted for nearly 6000 shares valued at nearly £32.000. Government stocks wore fairly active last week, but prices were on the easy side, tho 4 per cents, selling to return a yield, with redemption of slightly over 33 per cent. Dealings in local body stocks were mostly in Auckland issues. Ma Rerun, Drainage 4 i P er cent, sold at par. Sales of company stocks included Amalgamated BncK, 2 per cent, at £IOO 10s to £IOO 15s. N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. 44 per cent., 1939, at £94, and 1940’s at £94 10s to £95. Pyne, Gould, Guinness 5 per cent, first debentures sold at £lO3. Bank shares were fairly active, but several issues were slightly easier at the week-end Autralasia firmed on sales from £l2 5s to £l2 8s 6d, and National of Now Zealand from 63s to 63s 6d. Union of Australia after touching £lO 10s, eased to £lO 6s 6d. S. and A. Bank sold at £6 2s, and weakened to £5 19s 6d, ex dividend Mew South Wales were done at £35 ss, anu £35 Is 6d, ox dividend. New Zealand showed little movement. Commercial ol Australia eased from 19s 6d to 19s od, and tho preference sold at £9 5s od to £9 ss. Insurance shares showed an easier trend, particularly South British which sold at from 02s 6d, to 90s 6cl. Pastoral issues were quiet except Goldsbrougn, Mort, which went to 375, but fell away after the announcement of a 2 per cent, interim dividend. New Zealand industrial shares were dull, and mostly easier. Auckland Gas sold at from 21s 9d to 22s l 2 d, and the 15s paid at par. Christchurch Gas were done at 26s 9d and 275. Gear Meat were weak * at 16s 3d and 16s 9d. N.Z. Refrigerating sold at 19s 2d and 19s, and the 10s paid at 9s 5d to 9s 2 2 d. P’ and 0. deferred stock firmed to 3bs Od, following the announcement of the 4 per cent, dividend. Breweries were firm, except Tooths, which eased from 56s 6d to 555. The Woolworths issues wore in high favour, and heavily traded. -The Zealand shares advanced rapidly from £7 2s 6d to £8 3s 6d, but, following the an nouncement of tho final dividend, now share issue, they fell away to £7 os. Tile Sydney issue was even more active, and a large amount of business was done at up to £B, after which tho market cased to £7 Bs. The West Australian were firm at from £6 15s to £6 17s 6d. G. J. Coles were well supported, but after moving up to 83s 9d, they eased to 79s lid Edments weakened from 54s 9d to 50s. Sclfridges (Australasia) were done ul up to 40s, and the new issue at 39s and 38s 3d. Shillings were slightly firmer at from 17s 7d to 18s 3d. Leading Australian industrial shares showed a weaker tendency. Australian Glass dropped to 90s 6d, and British Tobacco from 46s 6d to 44s lid. Broken Hill Proprietary were irre gular, and fell away to 79s lOd, ex div. The contributing issue sold down to 70s. Electrolytic Zinc were also easier on the week. Mining shares were fairly active, especially Mount Lycll and Mount Morgan, both of which were (inn. Golden Crown advanced sharply from 4s to 6s 6d. Wnibi Investment moved up from 12s to 12s 6d.
