PAHIATUA, Nov. 25. A special meeting oi tno Borough Council was held to-day to consider the tenders lor tho erection of public conveniences. Theme present were;—Tho Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson), Crs. S. K. Siddeils, W. A. Carthew, G. H. Hodd, W. T. Brown, S. J. Judd, T. W. Watts, J. W. Sturton, J. E. Murphy and D. Moriarty. Stating that there was a strong civic leeling that the buildings should not be erected in tho Square, but in side streets, the Mayor said he thought that the subject should be postponed until the next council meeting. The Mayor’s remarks were endorsed by Urs. Hodd and Judd. Cl-. Sturton said that, owing to the steady rise in labour costs, it was necessary that the matter should proceed with the least possible delay. That the lowest tender (£390) be accepted was moved by Crs. Siddeils and Moariarty. An amendment that the matter be held over pending an investigation of a site other than the Square was moved and seconded by the Mayor and Cr. Hodd respectively. Votes were then cast as follow: hor the amendment: The Mayor, Crs. Hodd, Judd and Murphy. Against: Ors. Siddeils, Carthew, Brown, Watts, Sturton and Moriarty. The motion to accept the tender of £390 was carried after a long discussion. _ The judge of the calf competition at the Kakariki School on Tuesday afternoon was Mr Grogann. Mr Brockctt was also present. The placed calves are to be taken to Eketahuna for * the final judging. Inc three calves chosen for condition and handling were:—Grace Webb’s Sunlight 1, Clive Webb’s Shirley 2, Gordon Wilslior’s Molly 3. Those chosen for dairy type were: Leslie Wikhcr’s Trixie 1, Gordon W Usher’s Moly 2, Dinah Targets Polly 3 After spending a holiday as the guest of Mrs J. A. Ward, Mrs E. H. Sayers has returned to Marton. Mrs J. D. C. Crewe, m the absence ol the president (Mrs J. D. \Vilson)_, presided at the Women’s Institutes November meeting. Mrs Crewe read the motto for the day: “Ho ora to mahi (Work is life”) A vote of sympathy was accorded Mrs J. Cloghorn in her recent bereavement A parting gift from members was given Mrs O. Clarke. Competitions resulted as follow: Men’s butonholc, Mrs Vaughan 1 and 2; milk jug cover. Mm Vaughan 1, Mrs Crowe 2. For the decorations a vote of thanks was accorded Mcsdamcs O’Stykc and 1. 0 Btien. Miss Mary Martin, of Palmerston North, gave a talk on music, in which she made a brief sketch of the lives of her. favourite composers— Mozart and Schubert. Accompanied bv Miss Fcasey (Palmerston Noith) Miss Martin played Mozart’s Sonata No. 6 and the Dawes Melody on her violin. She then sang “Lullaby” (Mozart) and “Serenade” (Schubert). By request, she also sang “Drink to Me Only,” accompanying herself on the piano. Mies Martin and' Miss Fcasey wore warmly thanked for their recital.
