BOY SCOUT WEEK

SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. In tho Opera House, last night, a concert of much merit was presented in connection with the Scout Week now being held in Palmerston Nortji. The audience was not slow to show its appreciation of the excellent items- presented, which was most encouraging to the contributors. The first half of the programme was supplied almost entirely by Boy Scouts, and the second half by well-known local concert performers. The concert was arranged by the committee of the Manawatu Boy Scouts’ Association; assisted by the Palmerston North Rotary Club, and they are to be commended on the excellent- programme arranged. The curtain went up on the unfurling of-the flag and the singing of the National Anthem, following which a sketch by members of tho All Saints Troop illustrated the significance of the different points of the Scout badge and showed how the movement teaches tho boys to do their best at all times and be prepared for any emergency. A bracket of comic songs by Scoutmaster Steggles was well received, while “back-to-front drill by the St. Paul’s Troop kept the house in enjoyable mood. Scout S. Wright sang two songs and was followed by Scout Speedy in an elocutionary item, in which he acquitted himself well. Miss June Scott followed in a hunting dance, which was so well received that an encore was necessary. After a humorous sketch hy members of the West End Troop, the first half concluded with two liakas by All Saints’ Troop, which gained much favour. Mr F. A. Wollerman opened the second half with a bracket of solos which were well received. Alan Loveday, Palmerston North’s cight-year-old violin virtuoso, captured the house with his playing of “Rondo” (MozartIvreisler) and presented as encores “Capricciosa” (Reis), a piece he started learning only a week ago, and “Schon Rosmarin” (Ivreisler). Vocal solos by Miss Diederieh and Mr A. G. Brown proved popular and required repeat items. Making a welcome public reappearance, the Huia Straight Eight (Messrs A. V. Pizzey, J. Jones, G. Waters, S. B. Read, A. Stableford, W. J. Robertson, I. KRickard and T. P. Hart) presented a feast of song and so insistent was the demand that their original scheduled programme had to be added to. An orchestra of 15 added considerably to the excellence of the programme. Mr G. Houston discharged 'the duties of stage manager, while Scoutmaster L. G. Callis looked after the Scouts’ portion of the programme. Mr N. D. Stubbs, District Commissioner, thanked the public for their support, the contributors to the programme, the Rotary Club, and all who had assisted with the street .stall held during tho afternoon. He reminded the people of Palmerston North of the rally to be held at the Showgrounds on Saturday and appealed tor a big attendance. STREET STALL. .V , . A street stall was conducted near the Post Office, yesterday, and as a result the Scouts’ funds will be considerably augmented. Donations were generously given and readily disposed of. Tho stall was in ' the charge of Mrs A. E. Edwards' (converter), assisted by Mesdames Brown, Mills, Ross, Steggles, Christensen, James, Boag; 11. A. Bettle and Hancock.
