(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, Nov. 17. Tho monthly mooting of tho executive committee of the local branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was hold last night, Mr B. A. Norman presiding. Compulsory membership of tho union was discussed. Though the idea of compulsion might appear distasteful to some, the fact remains, it was said, that all other sections of the community are fully organised and are able to make their voice heard. Farmers alone are lagging behind in this respect. It was decided to support compulsory membership. Head offico has suggested raising the annual subscription. It was decided to strongly resist such a move. A committee has been set up at the head office to brnig down a report upon union police. It was decided to request thut this report be submitted to all branches before final adoption. Among other mattore dealt with by the executive committee were wages and holidays for farm workers; insurance of neighbours assisting farmers; fire insurance ; Meat Producers’ Board; Rural Intermediate Credit.; Ministerial replies to remits; and immigration. Tho Novomber meeting of tho Opiki Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon in the Hall. Mrs B. A. Norman was in the chair and read tho motto for the month, “Success comes to those who strive, and striving nevor moan.” Several visitors wore welcomed to the meoting, among them Mrs Symons and Mrs Richardson of tho Foxton Women’s Institute. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Aitcheson and Mrs Croad. A report written by Miss C. Cooksiey on tho half-yearly federation council meting was read. Mrs Claridgo presented a report upon tho arrangements for the noxt group rally to be held in Foxton in February, inter alia, as follows: —The rally is to begin ,at 10.30 a.m. A competition for a cotton frock to be worn by tho maker, and not to cost more than 10“ will bo judged first by a parade of the frocks worn by tho makers and then by,Bowing and the general finishing of the articles. Mrs McCorkindale will demonstrate on pottery work. A play will be presented by the Foxton institute and itoms will be given by tho Shannon and Opiki institutes. It was decided in view of the fact that the institute intonds holding a gymkhana in December that there will be no meting in December, but a meeting will be lioid in January, when tho competition will bo for the best worked duchess set, and the meeting will be a social afternoon open to visitors. The hostesses will bo Mesdames Aitcheson, Croad, Alvo, and Miss M. Alve. A competition for the best bag for string resulted: Mrs Webb 1, Mrs Horn 2, Mrs Cooksly 3. Tho hostesses responsible for tea arrangements at the gymkhana are Mesdames Marriott, Aitcheson, Sames, Horn, and Irwin. Mesdames Bond and Yulo will be the. gatekeepers. Mesdames Larsen and Alve will have the fancy and work stall, Mesdames White and Cooksiey the produce stall, Misses Irwin, M. and N. Alve and Southee the sweets and ice cream, and Mesdames Jackson, Webb, and Wilde the baby show. At the conclusion of tho business Mrs Symons, of Foxton, demonstrated on the making of wool rugs, and was keenly followed by all present. Judging by the enthusiasm shown by members there should bo found many of these beautiful rugs in tho homos of Opiki in the not too distant futuro. Mrs Larsen proposed a. vote of thanks to Mrs Symons, which was carried by acclamation. Afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses, Mesdames Yule, C. Young, and White.
