GREATER MELBOURNE.

AMENDMENTS TO BILL. . MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. Drastic amendments were submitted by the Government to the Greater Melbourne Rill when the debate was resumed in the Legislative Assembly to-day. The Government proposes to remove from the new council control of tramways, cemeteries,- gas, protection of life and property from fire, public health and building regulations. The Bill is now only a shadow of its former self, following widespread protests, and retains only powers for. oontrol or water supply, sewerage, rivers, motorbuses, bridges, parks and gardens. One member said that the Bill was now like a corpse after a post-mortem. The Deputy-Premier (Mr Old) said that the excisions had been made to get the Rill passed and the council established. . The debate was adjourned lor a week.
