TAXI-DRIVER INJURED.
STORY OF ATTACK. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 27. A sensational attack upon a taxidriver occurred shortly after midnight. Irwin was hailed by a man at the A taxi driven by Raymond Allen corner of Wellesley and Queen Streets, and was directed to proceed to the Great South Road. On reaching Market Rond the passenger said “turn to the right,” and as the car proceeded down tiie road the passenger appeared to bo looking for a house. Tho next thing Irwin knew he received a heavy oioiv from behind on the crown of the head, as though with a tyre lever, causing a nasty scalp wound about an inch long and half an inch wide. Before he was able to pull himself together the passenger scrambled out ot the ear and ran off along Market Road. Detectives are investigating. This morning Invin said that he felt dazed after the attack, and that when ho opened the door o ltlio taxi to get out he fell oil the roadway. Later lie reported the incident to a constable. The manager of the taxi company described /Twin “as a very quiet, retiring, and inoffensive man, and popular.” He was one ol the original members of the taxi company, and a member of tho first hoard of directors.
