AHMIiUUbI’, Uct. 14. The monthly meeting ot the Women’s Institute was heid on Tuesday atternoon. Airs Blowers oeeupied tho chan and extended a welcome 10 members and visitors. New members received were Mrs Boston and .Misses Brill and -McLaughlin. Airs Box, who was hi hospital, lias been ablo to return to her home, and has sent a letter to tho institute in appreciation ot the kind thought in sending nowers and expressions lor a speedy recovery. 'Hie members agreed to assist tho Hall Committee to work up a social evening to help raise funds for the health stamp campaign. An appeal to help the lepers of Aiakogai was put to tho mooting, and it was decided to bring gilts the next monthly meeting. Alesdames .Evans and B. hairless were appointixl delegates to tho council meetings. Tho motto for tho month is: “No life is a failure, which brightens, however faintly, the life of others.” Airs Simpson; of Woodvillo, ably demonstrated novelties, etc., and displayed an array of her work. She was accorded a voto of thanks by Airs Blowers. -Mrs Youle donated a bag ot seed potatoes for those entering tho competition, Airs Blowers thanking her. The competitions for a floral apron and pot of marmalade resulted as follow: Apron. AJrs Currie 1, Airs Brewer 2. Airs Flowers 3; marmalade, Mrs Bleakly 1, AJrs Currie 2, Aliss )i. Tremcwan 3; juniors (plato of m ng . er nuts), Alisa Al. Wilkin 1, Miss Boot 2, Al j « Hydnman 3. AJesdamcs Alcß’arlane and Simpson were tho judges and were accorded thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames 11. Eairlcss, Edmond, B’orlong, AJ.orris and Aliss Boot. The hostesses for November are to be Aiesdaines Hackett, Jones, Airs and Aliss llyndman.
Tbo Hall Committee hold their annual meeting on Tuesday night. The chairman (Air Brewer) read the report, which was most pleasing and quite satisfactory. The financial statement shewed a credit balance brought forward from last year,.£lo Os Bd. plus actual receipts, £69 9s 6d; expenditure,' £4l Is lid; leaving a credit of £3B 8s 3d on the year’s working, out of which £2O had been placed into a mortgage reserve sinking fund. It was strongly recommended to the incoming committee lo try to add further funds each year to the reserve fund so as to pay off the mortgage before the hut! incurred maintenance costa. The chairman mentioned the resignation of Mr 11. Maul, who was a great loss, being a , )" cr y willing helper in every way possible. It was with regret that the resignation was accepted, on account of Air Maul and family leaving the district, Mr Brewer expressed his appreciation to the committee for the work and support received from them, also of the secretary, who so ably fulfilled his duties. Thanks' wore also due to others who had helped. The committeo for the coming year are AJessrs W. Brewer (chairman), B’. Dunstall (secretary and treasurer), 11. Woodrcofe, 11. Bristow, N. B’inlay, W. Drummond, T. Paton, J. AlcDonell and B. Fairless. There was a splendid attendance at the Ashhurst range at the last shoot. J. Searle, who is showing splendid form, again secured a possible at 300yds. J. Griffiths, at 600yds, commenced with a magpie and finished with six bulls for 33 — an excellent shoot. Next Saturday, teams will bo selected to represent the club in tho Greer Shield shoot on Labour Day. Details of Saturday’s shoot are: —j. Searle, 35 —32—67; S. J. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held quite recently. There were not many present, but those who were carried on with the business. 'The balancesheet showed a satisfactory credit. Officers are:—Captain, Air Colin Brewer; vicecaptain, Air J. Borrett; secretary and treasurer, Air Alan Klink; these officers being re-elected as also was the president (Air W. Brewer). Arrangements were made for the opening day, which is to lake place, some timo this month. A meeting of the Health Camp Committee was held to further tho campaign for raising funds for health camps. Arrangements have been made to hold a combined cricket and tennis match, Ashhurst v. Pohangina, and then a return match Inter at Ashhurst. By treating these matches as a combined district picnic event, it is anticipated that the Health Camp funds will be materially assisted. It was further decided to organise a drama competition at Ashhurst when a challenge will be Issued to neighbouring AVomen’s Institutes to enter in a friendly way, tho winners to be decided by popular acclaim. A happy timo was spent in the Town Hall on AA’edncsday ovening, when the members of tho School Committee entertained all who so willingly assisted in preparing for tho recent children’s ball. The chairman (Air Wilkin) thanked those present for tin /i help. Tho committee thought they would iike to recompense them by entertaining the helpers. Items were given by Air Bristow, Air Tunnicliffe, Air L. Flowers, and Mr Findlay, and Airs Ilewit.t was at the piano. Games and dancing passed a pleasant evening.
