MARTON, Oct. 5. Members of the Marton Harrier Club competed for the Gould Cup on Saturday over a four and a-half miles course, traversing Wellington, Station, and Nga Tawa Roads, Calico Line, Bond, Sherman, and Follett Streets. The first ten arrived at the finishing point in the following order : F. "Williams, J. Taylor, R. Parkinson, D. Macpherson, A. Gorrie, M. Griffin, A. Holden, L. Smith, F. Hill, W. Edge. Next Saturday the club will hold the race for the Runnymede Cup donated by Mr A. Stuart. The race is from Marton to “Itunnymede” and the distance miles.

Mrs Edward Newman is visiting Palmerston North. Miss I. A. Gnfdon and Mrs I. E. Dodds visited Marton for the week-end. Mrs J. S. Howie, St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs H. F. Low, \\ anganui Roach Mr C. Henderson, of Harris Street, is making good progress following a recent operation for appendicitis. Following a postponement from Saturday on account of wet weather, the athletic sports were held at Huntlv School this morning. Two events, the quarter and half-mile in the senior championship, and the quarter-mile in the junior, have still to be run. H. B. G. Hadfiekl, with 21 points, is in an unassailable position for the junior championship, but the senior is in an interesting position. A. J. Mason is leading with 18 points, followed, by A. W. Fitzherbert 17, A. Alexander 13, and J. W. Gerard 12.

In the observance of Young People’s Day by the Presbyterian Church on Sunday special gatherings were held at St. Andrew’s, Marton. A children’s service was held in the morning, members of the Sunday school taking part. In the afternoon a combined Bible class meeting was held in St. Andrew’s Hall. Rev. A. Stevenson gave the address. Tea was enjoyed after which the gathering dispersed, and later assembled in church, where a special youth service was held. The first portion was conducted by the men from the senior Bible class —Messrs H. Reynolds, A. Gorrie, F. L. Nieol, H. Kempton and J. Duncan. Mr Stevenson gave an address. A general meeting of the Marton junior branch of the W.D.F.U. was held recently, with Miss J. Sutcliffe presiding, Simpson, president of the Marton branch of the Women’s Division, was present. A competition for the best Christmas gift, costing not more than Is, was won by Miss T. Wood, with Miss J. Anderson second. The competition was judged by Mesdames Kiteat and Harpur, Three teams acted charades and the leader of the winning team, Miss G. Barrington, was presented with a box of chocolates.
