PAYING FOR GERMAN ARMY.

BIG TAX INCREASE,

The first increase in taxation following the introduction of the two-year military service law rvas announced in Berlin on August 28. How Germany is to pay for the increased expenditure necessitated by the army's enlargement has been a topic of discussion of. political quarters in Berlin, it was considered certain that new taxation would be necessary, and this is confirmed by the announcement that the company tax is ?o be increased by 50 per cent, in two stages—2s per cent, this year and 25 per cent, next year. In addition it is expected that a Wehrstreuer (military defence tax) will shortly be imposed. This, it is thought, will be a form of supplementary income tax.
