RAILWAY DEVIATION

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Once again we have had the dangers of our railway crossings brought to our notice by the recent sad fatality at Terrace End, also by correspondence through your columns. We are all agreed that something must be done to eliminate this danger, but by which method we propose to do this is the burning question.

Your correspondent “Advance Palmerston,” in advocating the completion of the deviation has probably overlooked a very serious point and one which a great many supporters of this scheme have failed to mention. If my memory serves me rightly the original plans indicated that the station and shunting yards were to bo placed between Rangitikei Line and Milson bridge and within, say, .half a mile of the Public Hospital. From my own personal experience, extending over a number of years, I know full well what such an arrangement would mean to the patients and staff of this institution. My residence is over a mile (as the wind blows) from the station and 1 am often disturbed at night by the whistling of engines and the clang of shunting. I would be very pleased to do what little I can to help any effort to have the. crossings eliminated but very sorry to realise, after such effort was made, that quch a serious menace to the said patients and staff had been created.—-I am, etc., C. L. TURNBULL. 100 Fitzherbert Avenue, Oct. 3, 1936.
