MORE UNEMPLOYED.
CONCERN IN RANGITIKEI. “I am not at all happy regarding this unemployed position,” said the chairman (Cr K. W. Dalrvmple) at the meeting of the Rangitikei County Council, on Thursday. It was pointed out that the registered unemployed at Marton and Turakina to-day were 84, not including the 80 men transferred to public works at Kakariki, whereas 12 months ago the total was 93, which included the relief men now at Kakariki. The trouble was that natives were coming into Ratana from all parts of the North Island and registering as unemployed in the hope of getting on to the railway deviation work at Turakina. In the meantime, however, they fell as something of a burden on the County Council.
Cr Dalrymple said the question of casual labour was a very serious one, and Or A. S. Coleman endorsed this view. He quoted an instance of a farmer who offered a man a good position, but it was turned down, the man preferring to stay on relief. The chairman: Dozens of similar instances could be quoted. Cr Stuart: The standard of wages and conditions are too large for the average employer. The engineer was instructed to keep a close watch on No. 5 scheme works, the latter stating that he was only using the men on essential works.
