Protection for tho whitebait fisherman was urged by Mr H. Osborne, tie said it was most unfair that notices should appear in various parts of tho island proclaiming “fresh I'oxton whitebait” for sale when none was being caught locally. It was strange, but nevertheless true, that the local whitebait possessed a inueii more do lectable flavour than that caught elsewhere. Under the circumstances it was most unfair that whitebait tiom other parts should bo labelled "Foxton.” It was decided to communicate with the Minister for Fisheries requesting that steps be taken to liavo whitebait sold “true to label.” It was decided, in view of the inct that scarcely any whitebait had _ been taken from the Manawutu River this season owing to the unsettled stato of the weathor, that the Minister lie approached with a request for the extension of the season on tho Manawatu River for another month, as the season is clue to close on November 15. There was a fair “run” of whitebait in the Manawatu River yesterday and some good catches wero registered. Fishermen anticipate a good "ruir' next week.
