RANDWICK MEETING.

COMMENT ON THE DERBY. RIDING OF MALA. Received October 5. 11.45 a.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 5. The weather is fine for the Randwick meeting. The Eight-Hour Day publi* holiday also coincides. Gold Rod jarred a front joint during the running of the Derby, and is not likely to sta.rt in the Melbourne Cup. Silver Jubilee broke down badlv in the Epsom Handicap. There is a doubt whether he will race again. The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the principal races on Saturday, says the Epsom was one of the most eventful in the long history of this important mile race. Gay Lover did not keep a straight course in the straight, veering out apparently under pressure. Gay Lover and Capris pirovided a great duel, which ended so unsatisfactorily. Capris is the first mare to win the Epsom for thirty years. The Derby was marred by Shakespeare’s fall and by the change in tactics in the riding of Mala, which left the impression that the colt’s prospects had been prejudiced. Mala wss not ridden with judgment, and the race was made for Talking. Mala had Gold Rod beaten 1* furlongs from the finish, but the effort took toll of his reserves and he fell an easy prey to Talking’s challenge. The Spring Stakes served to emphasise the superiority of the New lander, Silver Ring, and the prospects of Sydney horses winning any weight-for-age races at this meeting are not bright.

A report of the meeting appears on page 10.
