THE CRICKET SEASON

NOMINATIONS OF TEAMS. GRADES ARRANGED. A meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Cricket Association was hold last evening, Mr A. M. Ongley presiding. Also present were Messrs W. H. Wilson, E. J. Worry, G. Griggs B. Weir, J. Gallichan, E. S. Hubbard, K. Olliver and the secretary (Mr R. A. Brace). It was explained that the meeting had been called for the purposo of considering nominations of teams for entry in the competitions and the secretary reported that entries had been received as follow. — Senior A. —United, Y.M.C.A., City, High School, Palmerston, Old Boys, Combined Services. Sonior B. —Y.M.C.A., City, Old Boys, Kia Toa. Junior A. —Combined Services, HL. Young's, United, High School, Optimists, Y.M.C.A., Old Boys. Junior B.—United, City, Kia Toa. The chairman pointed out that it would not be advisable to have more than six teams in the senior A competition, and a motion limiting the division to this number was passed. It was also decided to keep in the same teams as last year, this meaning that Combined Services will drop out of the nominations.’

With the object of securing six teams for the senior B grade, it was resolved that fi\o nominations (taking in Combined Services) received be accepted and that H. L. Young’s bo given the opportunity to transfer their junior A entry to this division. In considering the question of the junior B division, Mr Brace contended that there should be six teams in this section, and four in the junior A. He moved that two teams of the latter division be asked to transfer to junior B. This would result in five teams competing in the junior B and four ill the Junior A. Further, the two teams in question would not stand much chance against the others of their division, he said. It was subsequently resolved that Y.M.C.A., Old Boys, United. City and Kia. Toa comprise the junior B division. OPENING DATE. The opening day for all competitions was fixed for Saturday. October 10, and the commencing time 1.30 p.m. , The secretary reported that lie had applied for grounds, and the wickets required would he 6ix at the Sportsground, four at Terrace End and one at High School. The chairman stated that the reserves committee of the City Council desired to raise the charges for the grounds, the reason being that overtime would have to he paid for ™* e men working on them on Saturday morning. The secretary contended that it the committee had definitely to pav overtime to their workmen the Cricket Association should endeavour to meet the increase and pass it on. It was announced that four teams had applied for wickets to practise on to-day, and on a show of ha.nds it was decided they be not charged for their Messrs Onglev and P. A. It. Molonev were appointed as delegates to attend a. con fere nc-e of the .nine minor associations of the Wellington district to be held in the Capital City next- week. Manawatu’s application for the tormatiou of a fifth Iviunket Shield disfrict was referred to in a letter from the New Zealand Council (already published in the “Standard”), the letter suggesting that, if Manawatu wished, the proposal would be treated as a notice of motion for consideration at the November meeting. The chairman stated that the matter was to be discussed at the conference of the nine minor associations at Wellington next week and that it might be better to delay replying to Christchurch until after that conference. This was agreed to.
