VICTORY TO SCOTT
FIRST AT JOHANNESBURG. A MODEST WINNER. “ORDINARY JOB OF WORK.” (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received October *2, 9.50 a.m. JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 1. Messrs C. W. A. Scott and GilesGuthrie, flying a Percival Vega Gull machine, have arrived at Johannesburg, thus winning the London-Johannesburg air race. They left Abercorn at 4.45 a.m. (local time) on the last stage of their long flight. Scott’s official time was 52 hours 56 minutes 38 seconds, and his average speed was 123 miles an hour. Scott was flagged in at Johannesburg at 12.36 p.m., local time. He completed the flight in 19 hours 28 minutes Jess than Mrs J. A. Mollison’s record-breaking flight to Capetown. She however, flew by a different route. Scott said: “It was just an ordinary job of work. There were no high spots or tough weather. It was a bit mucky and bumpy after Tabora (in Tanganyika), but it was less exacting than the Melbourne flight, loecause it was shorter.” Scott revealed that till he landed he was unaware whether he was still in the race. He regretted Halse’s ill luck in crashing. Scott has decided not to continue to the Cape in an attempt to gain a new record. I). Llewellyn, who was flying second, crashed at Banks, Lake Tanganyika. The ’plane was wrecked, but the occupants are safe. A fund has been opened at the suggestion of the Minister of Defence (Hon. O. Pirow), and with the approval of General Hertzog and Mr N. C. Havenga, to mark appreciation of Captain Halse’s effort.
