RETAINED BY LABOUR. AIR OSBORNE’S MAJORITY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. Sept. 30. Labour retained the Manukau seat at the by-election when tbe Government candidate, Air A. G. Osborne. ) was returned with a majority of 4411 ’ over the National Party candidate, Mr 1 F. 4V. Doidge. I The result of the voting was: . A. G. Osborne (Labour 8241 , F. W. Doidge (National) 3830 , Alajority for Osborne 4411 The mini Iyer of votes east was slightly lower than those recorded at the General Election lust November. Today a total of 12,100 electors exercised their votes, as compared with 13,384 a.t the General Election, when Mr Jordan gained 70.22 per cent, of the votes cast. Air Osborne to-day polled 88.10 per cent, of the fotal votes recorded. There are 174 absentee votes and 370 postal votes yet to come. ; There were 17 polling places in tbe electorate and Air Osborne obtained majorities at 15 of those. Loud cheering by a large crowd which had congregated outside the Onehunga Post Office greeted the announcement of the filial result. The appearance of the two candidates in the front- porch of the Post Office was the signal for even greater applause. Addressing the crowd, Air Osborne said be wished to express his sincere thanks to the people of Alanukau. The issue before the people of New Zealand was whether the people of Alanukau endorsed tbe policy of tbe Government or not. “The result.” said Air Osborne, “proves conclusively to me —and I believe to tbe whole of New Zealand—that the people of Alanukau are desirous of having more legislation of the kind already passed by the Government. I do not look on this victory as a personal one.” “I join you in hearty congratulations to Mr Osborne,” said Air Doidge. He said his party bad managed to reduce the Labour majority by about 1000 votes.
