ENGAGEMENT.

PLANK—CURRIE. The engagement is announced of Margaret Isabelle, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs D. D. Currie, of Hereford Street, Palmerston North, to Desmond Edward, youngest son of Mr and Mrs L. J. Plank, of Elmira Avenue, Palmerston North. SPRING FAIR. CUBA STREET LADIES’ GUILD. Organised bv the Cuba Street Methoodist Church Ladies’ Guild, a most successful spring fair was held yesterday afternoon. The tunefcion was officially opened by Rev. A. Blakemore, who explained that it was being held in the interest of the trust fund, front which the expenditure from year to year was considerable. He felt the day had come when the Church ought to cense apologising for itself and realise the very great work it was engaged in. The basis of life was spiritual, not material, although people were apt to think that life, which consisted of so many material tilings, depended entirely on the material. Such an enterprise as the spring fair was essentially a part of the church work. The Sunday'schoolroom was gaily decorated for the occasion, and the stalls were all attractively arranged. The splendid array of articles showed much work and preparation on the part of the members. Much credit is due to tiie organising secretary (Mrs G. G. Hancox) for the excellent arrangements. The basket-shaped flower stall was particularly attractive, orange and brown being the predominating colours in the decorative scheme. The stalls and stall-holders were as follow: Produce, Mrs Pederson, Messrs A. H. Cresswell, J. Win ton; cooked food, Mesdames T. R. Hodder, J. Boniface, A. Boniface, and A. Newman; flowers and plants, Mrs Merchant, Mr and Mrs J. B. Morgan; surprise packets, Mesdames J. Candy and Prisk ; “wdiite elephant” stall, Mesdames A. H. Fisher, Allsop and Miss Sandford; work stall, Mesdames A. Blakemore, J. Winton, and Wilkinson; shilling stall, Mesdames P. J. Melleiv C. A. Waters, A. E. Fisher: sweets, Mesdames G. G. Hancox, L. M. Boyes, E. T. McKain; afternoon tea, Mesdames F. Dorset, A. Ferguson, Bndden, Giles, Waugh; darts, Messrs T. R. Hodder, A. Boniface; blackboards, Mr P. Gourlay; copper trail, Messrs J. Candy, L. M. Boyce, E. Boniface; putting, Air T. R. Hodder; shooting gallery, Air T. Wilkinson. The attendance at night was again satisfactory, and at the close the few articles left on the stalls were put up by Dutch auction by Air E. T. AloKain. An interesting programme had been arranged, and provided pleasing entertainment. The choir, under the leadership of Air H. T. Pitcher, rendered glees, Air Drake presiding at the piano. Vocal solos by Air F. Coupe and elocutionary items by Aliss Pauline AlcKain were appreciated, the performers later being thanked hv Mr Blakemore.
