OAR CAUGHT BY TIDE.
OCCUPANTS SWEPT FROM CAUSEWAY. A race between motor-car and tide ended in tragedy in France in August. A notary, M. Chabonnier, and his maid were motoring from tiie island of Noirmoutiers to Formentine on tiie mainland. M. Chabonnier thought that he had just the time to cross the causeway before the tide rose, but with still a long way to go he noticed that the waves were advancing rapidly. .He drove desperately over the uneven, causeway to rea.ch safety, but it was too late. The water mounted above the axles, reached the engine, and the ear stopped. The notary and the maid jumped out and the crew of a fishing smack saw them trying to reach a light-buoy. The woman was swept back into the sea. The man tried to save her, but was himself swept off the causeway and disappeared.
