JOHNE’S DISEASE.
SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED. ABSENCE IN MANAWATU. Johne’s disease, an outbreak of which, it has been reported, has resulted in the slaughtering of 103 head of Jersey cattle in the Kaupokonui and Otakeho districts, Taranaki, is a chronic sub-acute disease in cattle which is characterised by a chronic inflammation of the lining of the bowels. The inflammation, an authority states, is caused by an acid-faSt bacillus known at Johne’s bacillus. Affected animals develop a laxative condition which at later stages becomes typical diarrhoea. It was stated to a “Standard” reporter to-dny by an official of the Department of'Agriculture at Palmerston North that any suspicious case of scouring in cattle in the Manawatu district was thoroughly investigated both in the field and by laboratory tests at Wallncoville. No case whatever had been reported in the Manawatu area, though the disease existed in Taranaki and the "Waikato.
