BATTLE FOR COTTON

LONDON, Sept. 16.

At Oxhey, in the British professional golfers’ match-play championship; firstround matches resulted:—

A. H. Padgham (holder) beat 'Williams 7 and 6, It. A. Whitcombe beat Lane 1 up, Lacey beat Branch 2 and 1, E. It. Whitcombe beat Davies 3 and 2, Havers beat Hooker 2 up, Alliss beat Bright 5 and 3, C. A. Whitcombe beat Large 4 and 3, Cox beat T. Perry 4 and 3, Cotton beat Adams at the twentieth, C. Ezar beat Sam King 3 and 2. Cotton and Adams had a terrific fight. Cotton was out in 34 to stand two up, but Adams squared the game at the sixteenth. He outdrove the green at the twentieth, Cotton winning with a four against a five. Ezar is the first American ever to compete in this tournament. SECOND AND THIRD ROUNDS. Whitcombe 1 up, Alliss beat Faulkner 6 and 5, Collins beat Shoesinith 4 and 3, Osborne beat Matthews 4 and 3, Rees beat Denny 1 up, Sutton beat Cotton 2 up. CENTENARY TOURNEY. ADELAIDE, Sept. 16. The Centenary amateur and professional golf championships were continued to-day. Results are : Amateurs.—Quarter-finals: Sawers beat Whitton 7 and 6, Nettlefold bent H. Thredgold 1 up, Winser beat H. Hattersley at the 41st, Rymill beat R. Christie at the 40th. Semi-finals: R. Sawers (South Australia) beat C. Winser (South Australia) 4 and 3. W. Rymill (South Australia) beat L. Nettlefold (Tasmania) 3 and 1. Professionals.—Semi-finals: 51. Smith (South Australia) beat R. Stewart (South Australia) 4 and 3. A. Toogaod (Tasmania) beat G. Naismith (Victoria) one up.
