LESS PRODUCTION.
HAURAKI PLAINS AREA. LAND DEVELOPMENT PLAN. The annual report on drainage operations in the Hauraki Plains for the period ending March 31, which was laid on the table of the House of Representatives last week by the Minister of Lands, states that the years rainfall has been excessive, particularly during the summer. Although the growth of grass has been abundant, most of the settlers, owing to the vagaries of the season, have found thenproduction below normal. The butter production totalled 3350 tons, compared with 2975 tons in the previous year, and cheese 2305 tons, as against 2698 tons.
The chief drainage engineer recommends for consideration the development of 11,000 acres of Crown land, known as the Pouarua area, lying to the south of Waitakaruru and west of the settled lands on the western side of the Pinko River. With consolidation the land would become suitable for grazing. A considerable portion of the area has already -reached an advanced stage of development and it could be prepared for permanent settlement in a few years’ time.
