FROM TRACK AND STABLE.

RUNNING AT WANGANUI. AVONDALE CANDIDATES. (By “Spectator.”) Icing, winner or the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, is owned by Hr G. W. Currie, and is a fine big chestnut filly by Limond from Aspic. A full-sister to lout lo Monde and a half-sister to Aspian, loin" is bred from the imported mare Aspic, by Polymelus from the Isinglass mare Jelly. . . , , Sigurd, second to Icing, is a good-loolc-ing colt by Siegfried, trom tho imported mare All Bright, whose progeny have yet to make a name for themselves, lhe dam is by Grand Parade (sire of Grand Knight) from Bright Folly, by Black Jester. Screen Star, who was third, is a shapely gelding, also by Siegfried, from Painted Screen, and therefore a halt-brother lo Movie Star. Orac again went a sound race on Saturday, but he could not foot it with Wotan over the closing stages. Orac’s dam, Wenday, is bred on attractive lines, as she was got by Day Comet from W'enona, by Spalpeen—Waimunga, by Explosion—Stepfast, by St. Hippo—Stepfeldt. Surella did not get away well on the first day in the hack sprint, but he came home fast to be eighth. He mude amends in the Spring Hack Handicap on Saturday by recording an easy win, and should go on to better things. He is by Surveyor from Starella, and is a half-brother to Ballymoney. He claims engagements at Avondale.

Wotan finished on solidly in the Putiki Hark on Thursday to take second money, and went one better on Saturday by scoring decisively in the Moutoa Hack Handicap. The Siegfried four-year-old looks like running out a middle distance and more should be heard of him in the near future. His owners, Messrs Smith Brothers, recently had him on the sale list, but evidently no business has been done. AT AVONDALE. Tho following riding engagements are announced tor the AvonUu.e meeting: - \v. isariie, Mal-deMer, Tip Toes, rray Jilt; P. ream, Scotland, itoyai Passage; O. Evans, .Doric Star; J. Meinally, aurvanna; T. E. Daker, Merry Lap; P. Meilroy, Emancipation; It. Stratton, Elanage, Thurwiml, Lord Willonyx; it. Horne, Love Parade; \V. J. Broughton, Lady Valina; E. Fergus, Benighted. Gay Talkie showed up in his Pakuranga engagement and is duo to contest tno Swanson ilandicap and the Guineas at Avonda.e. 'the Gay Shield colt, though a maiden, recorded some good performances last season and gamed a number of platings. lto gave the impression that ho would stick on rather well.

Palustre is looking very well at Takanini and is working accordingly. She has accepted for the Guineas and her form in the Henderson Handicap should prove enlightening. This filly did not run a bad race last season and although she was successful only at Whangarei her form throughout was consistent and she should make good this term. Debha.ni showed himself to be fairly forward in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui in running third to Karl and Fanner, and the Lackham four-year-old will oarry strong support in the Champion Plate at Avondale on Saturday. He is one of T. K. George’s string, and was not produced at Wanganui on the second day. Anion has been displaying plenty of dash of late and would need only to please in his final track work to conic into tavour for his engagements at Avondale. Anion is in the Champion Hack Plate and Guineas and if all goes well will probably contest both races. He was a consistent performer last season and although he failed to win showed distinct promise by gaining places in tho spring classics to Stretto, Gallio, and company. Takanini has a fine record in the two above.. mentioned events and in recent years Eaglet., Pillow Fight, Gay Sheila, and Gay Blonde won the Guineas, while Pillow Fight, Gay Sheila, and Nun Nicer annexed the Plato also. Three Takanini colts due to make their debut in the Avondale Stakes are Elanage, Love Parade, and Bachelor King. The trio have all done well up to the present and have shown enough speed to ensure that they will acquit themselves creditably. Elanage, by Posterity*— Impetuous, is perhaps the choice at the moment, though Bachelor King, by Lapidary—Miss Louis, is also well forward and gives the impression that he shouid stay well. Love Parade is not as big as the other pair, but gallops nicely and should also shape well. GENERAL. The Ilawera trainer, J. Fryer, will take Advance Plane, Kia Ora, and Ca.lamost to i'oxton. Advance Plane and C'allamost were in the limelight at New Plymouth and should add to their records at boxton. J. Flyer’s hurdler Oriel, who gave a dashing display over the schooling hurdles before leaving for Wanganui, bled badly in the hurdle race on Thursday, and returned home immediately alter, ile is not likely to be further persevered with. Brevity continues to give every satisfaction in his schooling tasks and at Riccarton last week he jumped five hurdles in a brilliant manner, Polygraph accompanying him over the last four. Fiord jumped two hurdles. Track reports from Sydney state that Rob Roy is galloping well in his work. He did not show up as a two-year-old, but appears to have trainod on. Rob Roy is a half-brother by Night Raid to Homer, who dead-heated in tho A.J.C. Derby. Quadrilateral, the dam of Rob Roy, was got by Square Measure from Poltara, by Polymelus, and belongs to the Paraffin family. ; . . Silver Brier, the winner of the principal handicap on the first day of tho Wanganui meeting, was not deemed worthy of a nomination in the New Zealand Cup. She is a five-year-old mare by Silverado from Paper Rose, by Paper Money from Christinas Rose, by Heliotrope (son of St. Frusquin) from Evadne, by Sidus —You-go-off, by Sir Hugo—Fuse, by Bend Or. Some surprise has been expressed in certain quarters at the nomination of Epris for the New Zealand Cup. Epris holds better credentials for nomination than half tho field engaged, and on the score of breeding holds claims to be considered a stayer. Epris was got by Shambles from Jeanerette, by Kilbroney —lberia, by Grafton —Ilcrda, by Blue Mountain—Lorida, by Vespasian—Leone, by Ynttendon —Thyra, by Boiardo —Rose of Denmark, by Stockwell. It may not be what is generally regarded as a fashionablo pedigree, but it shows suggestions of stamina, and Epris, under a handy weight, has displayed indications of being able to go a distance. There is a possibility that Greek Shepherd will not make liis reappearance for a few weeks yet, states a Ricoarton correspondent. He has been suffering from a mishap to a fetlock joint that occurred in July, and it has not been deemed ad-

visable to give him anything beyond easy exercises. However, ho hns not been, allowed to put on much surplus condition and he will not take a great deal of wihd-ing-up work when it is decided to resume serious operations with him. The stud career of Lucullus lias always been investod with much interest since tho German-bred horse won a place with notable sires in New Zealand. Fairly scouted when placed at the services of breeders at a low fee, to be eventually sold at auction for the paltry sum of 25 guineas, are the outstanding facts in connection with the career of Lucullus in England. In the early stages of his stud career in Auckland Lucullus had to live down a good deal of projudice, and, although he was never really advantageously placed, his progeny have won stakes to the amount of £147,462, which ombraco leading events on the flat, over hurdles, and across country. Several daughters of Lucullus have produced winners, and one of his sons, King Lu, is making a name for himself as a sire. Lucullus, who died in 1934, furnished a striking illustration of what can happen in tho career of a stallion when transferred from one hemisphere to another.
