PAHIATUA
PAHIATUA, July 23. Preliminary arrangements for the staging of a professional wrestling match were made at a meeting of the Pahiatua Motor Sports Club. It was reported that the Pahiatua Boxing Association would lend the necessary gear, etc., to the club. It was decided that the secretary write to the Dannevirke Wrestling Association and invite the secretary and chairman to meet the Pahiatua Sports Club’s committee at the earliest possible date so that a date for the match could be fixed. It was also decided to communicate with Mr C. Cooper, of Newman, to find out if he has any amateurs available for the preliminaries from his wrestling school. At the same meeting a letter was to hand from the Defence Department advising that the Drill Hall would not be available for skating. The following are the results of games under the Bush Women’s Hockey Association : —Kaitawa 3 v. Nireah'a 1 ; United 7 v. Wanderers 3; Hamua, a bye. Next week Kaitawa meet United and this match will decide the winners of the championship. Arrangements are under way for the Bush representatives and a B team to go to Masterton on Saturday to meet the Wairarapa teams. A challenge by the Bush representatives has been entered for the Harper Cup, now held by the liangitikei Association.
A dance was held by the Pahiatua Horse Sports Club last evening. The arrangements were carried out by Miss Boyd and Messrs F. E. Ward, J T. Paget, R. and G. Wade, M. and W. Fulton, and T. Biggar. The competition prizes were donated by Messrs McCardle Bros, and A. C. Timms. During the evening extras were played by Mrs A. Tait and Miss L. White. Junior grade basketball games resulted as follow:—Athletic lo v. Convent 14; High School 16 v. Woodville 15. Athletic scored their first win of the season by beating Convent, the competition loaders. With one more game to play High School have a lead of one point over Convent. A “pantry” evening for Miss P. Bentley was held at the home of Mrs E. Lucas. Bridge and euchre games entertained the party, the prize-win-ners being Mrs J. Thompson and Mrs W. Rutherford (bridge), Mrs Brabner (euchre), and Mrs R. Davey (consolation). Miss Bentley received many gifts. Mrs G. H. Gibbs presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaitawa Women’s Institute. The competition was for the best three-monthly institute programme, and resulted in Mrs C. Fanning being first and Mrs J. Swanney second. A competition arranged by the hostesses, Mesdames Gibson and Fanning, was won by Mrs Swanney. Mrs J. D. C. Crewe gave a demonstration on the making of various useful articles, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss R. Burgess was elected a new member.
At Eketahuna yesterday Old Boys beat Athletic in a hard-fought game by 12 points to 5. For Athletic, P. Neary, R. Alillar, and F. Mills were outstanding in the backs and B. Fowke and J. Paget in the forwards. Mr W. Udy was the referee. With the fifth shoot the first round of tho Byrne Shield competition has been completed. Nireaha are leading Alakomako by 10 points as follow: Nireaha, 4778; Alakomako, 4768; Alagamutu, 4715; Hukanui, 4689; Alangatninoka, 4672; Konini, 4619. Individual scores are : —S. Aanensen (Toki), 492; J. D. Thomson and L. Heayns (Mail gam utu), 489; A. Tait (Mangamutu). 487; R. Lawrence (Nireaha), 486; J. Sargent (Makomako), 486; A\ T . Eising (Alakomako), 485; M. AA'alker (Konini), 484. At an early hour this morning the residence of Messrs Harris Bros., at Ballanee. was destroyed by fire. The reflection could bo seen for miles, and many in Pahiatua thought the outbreak had taken place at Atangamutu. Miss Eva Cavanagh was entertained at a social evening at the Hukanui Hall prior to her recent marriage. Mr R. feddie, on behalf of the Hukanui Rifle Club, made a presentation to Aliss Cavanagh. Mr A. Lawrence, on behalf of the Tennis Club, gave the guest a fruit bowl. Airs L. AVestwood, of Christchurch, who lias been visiting Mrs AV. ‘J’. Brown, Dawson Street, has returned home. Airs J. 11. C. Hunter and her daughter, Airs R. L. Darley, have left for Auckland. Alesdames A. A. Vaughan (Pahiatua), J. Alacdonald (Alangamutu), Hobbs (Hamua), Lunt (Horoeka), and McAnaulty (Kaiparoro) will represent local institutes at the Dominion Conference which opens at Dunedin shortly. Airs R. C. Austin is the representative for the BushAA’airarapa Federation. A motor truck driven by Air A. Sunnex and a car driven by Air B. Wills, junr., were involved in a collision, this morning, near Ballanee. Neither occupant was injured. Tho car was damaged on one side. The twenty-first birthday of Aliss Florence Comforth', daughter of A/r and Airs R. Cornforth (Oeie) was celebrated on Monday. Air F. S. 11. Bolton proposed the toast of Aliss Cornforth’s health and Mr C. Davies responded on her behalf. Doris Robson presented the guest cf the evening with a gold key.
