BUILDING PLANS.

GOVERNMENT’S SCHEME. COMMENCEMENT SOON. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) AVELLINGT'ON, July 23. Within a fortnight the Government expect to be in a position to call tenders for the erection of the first homes tinder their comprehensive housing policy. This statement was made to-day b\ the Prime Minister (lit. Hon. Al. J. Savage). He pointed out that the Gov eminent already had land at Orakei (Auckland). Aliramar and Lower Hutt “AVe will assist the men who want to build homes for themselves,” he said. “We will also construct houses whicli tho workers can rent. We do not want anything in the nature of standardised houses or tenements. What will be done will be the building of real homes where children can bo reared under decent conditions. There is no need to create a tenement position in New Zealand. “As soon as we get started we will go for our lives all the time, but we will not do ‘jerry’ building. AVe don’t want the people to be able to stay inside their homes and see down the street through cracks in the walls. AVe do not want standardised bouses built in groups in which people can say, ‘there they are.’ AVe have a vision of real homes, our job is to -give effect to it,” Mr Savage said. LOCAL BODIES’ HELP. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, July 23. Referring to the fact that, within a fortnight, the Government would be making a start in building homes at Aliramar and in the Hutt Valley, as well as in other centres of the Dominion, Air Savago said to-dav that people in need of homes could look with confidence to having their hopes realised within the near future. The housing scheme would be prosecuted energetically, but the Government would also give every assistance to the man who was anxious to secure the cooperation of local bodies, and he saw no reason whv it should not be forthcoming.
